Happy 100th Birthday Giovanni 🎂

From a small village in Abruzzo, Italy, Giovanni came to Australia in 1955 looking for better opportunities. His work at BHP, Wangi Power Station, the Snowy Mountains Hydro Scheme and other places gave him opportunities in concreting, carpentry, tiling, plumbing and crane driving, among other jobs – a range of skills he took pride in as a self-proclaimed Do-It-Yourself Specialist.

Marrying his beloved Luisa (“Lisetta”) in 1960, Giovanni is a devoted family man to his children Nicola, Anna Maria, and Frank, and to his grandchildren Jonathon and William. He built his family life in Australia, returning to Italy only once in 1987 to visit relatives.

Giovanni always loved to garden and continues spending time there, even keeping chickens until quite recently. He also enjoys bingo, hoy and raffles. His favourite pastime, however, is probably going to all-you-can-eat restaurants (known affectionately in the family as ‘pig pens’).

Hunter Multicultural Communities is deeply concerned by reports of racist stickers appearing in Cessnock.

Just days after the wonderful celebration of cultural diversity at Maitland's Riverlights festival, these reports are a disappointing reminder that racism remains an issue in our region.

The Hunter's multicultural communities have contributed to our region for generations. Celebrating our diversity must go hand in hand with challenging racism and ensuring everyone feels safe, respected, and welcome.

We stand alongside multicultural communities across the Hunter and support efforts to report and remove this material.

We are deeply saddened by the passing today of Ibrahim Attilla, the first President of Hunter Multicultural Communities, who served from 1977 to 1989.

As HMC approaches its 50th anniversary in 2027, we remember Ibrahim’s foundational role in our organisation and honour his contribution to advancing mulitculturalism across the Hunter.

On behalf of HMC’s Board, staff, volunteers, members, and the communities across the Hunter supported by his pioneering work, we express our deep gratitude and extend our heartfelt condolences to Ibrahim’s family, friends, and all who knew him.
