Severe Weather Warning for damaging winds for people in the North East, West and South Gippsland and East Gippsland forecast districts.

Issued at 5:04 am EST on Wednesday 9 July 2014.

A cold front will cross the State today as an associated low pressure system moves towards Tasmania. The low will pass just to the south of Victoria overnight and early Thursday.

Northerly winds averaging 60 to 70 km/h with peak gusts around 100km/h are expected over Alpine parts of the North East, West and South Gippsland and East Gippsland forecast districts. Coastal parts of West Gippsland may also experience gusts around 90km/h late afternoon and evening.

The Severe Weather Warning for parts of the Wimmera, North Central, South West and Central forecast districts has been cancelled, but the situation will continue to be monitored and further warnings will be issued if necessary.

Strongest wind gusts recorded overnight (up to 5am Wednesday) were: 98km/h Mt William (10.37pm), 93km/h at Hamilton (10.17pm) 87km/h Melbourne Airport (10.13pm) and 85km/h at Mt Buller (3.46am).

Severe Weather Warning for damaging winds for people in the North East, South West, Central, West and South Gippsland and East Gippsland forecast districts

A strong cold front will cross the Bight on Friday, with an associated low pressure system crossing waters south of the Bight to be just west of Tasmania by Saturday morning. Northerly winds will strengthen over southern Victoria during Friday, reaching gale force at times ahead of the front. This front is not expected to cross the State until Saturday, with colder and squally south to southwest winds following the change.

Damaging winds around 80 km/hr with peak gusts to 120 km/hr are forecast to develop early on Friday mainly over elevated areas above 800m of the North East, West and South Gippsland and East Gippsland districts.

Winds will increase during Friday morning over the South West and Central districts, mainly in elevated areas and reaching around 60 km/hr with damaging gusts to 100-110 km/hr during the afternoon and evening.

The State Emergency Service advises that people should:

Move vehicles under cover or away from trees.
Secure or put away loose items around your house, yard and balcony.
Keep clear of fallen power lines.
