If you use the Wamboin Community facilities, the Wamboin Rural Fire Brigade station is well signposted. Be aware that a call-out can occur anytime of the day, 365 days a year!
Our trucks are large so be mindful when parking. (Don’t park in the yellow zone)We attend bushfires, house fires, car fires ambulance assists, trees down to name a few. A recent visitor almost blocked our primary vehicle from being available and it was heard “there aren’t bushfires at this time of the year” as the excuse for parking there. Please don’t block any vehicle access in front of any RFS station including our mates at Sutton, Gundaroo or Bungendore brigades.

Our Community Engagement Team will be at the Wamboin markets today between 9am and Midday. Did you know that we can help you asses your property, or even arrange to visit to help you prepare for bushfires? As an example, we can advise what you need to do to allow a RFS fire tanker to safely get close to your home, as our vehicles are much larger than the family car. Now is the time to ask for assistance and take some steps to prepare, not when the fire is on your doorstep. See you today?

If you are new to the area, and want to know about burning off in the “out of fire season” (or better known now as the the Fire Danger Period), come and have a chat with our Community Engagement Team this morning. From 9am until midday, the Wamboin Markets is the place to come. Have a coffee and an egg and bacon roll then stroll across to our shopfront. Even those who have lived in the area for many years aren’t quite sure or don’t know of all the rules and what should be done to complete pile burns safely. See you there!

Pile burns? If you intend to burn off a pile of vegetation, we recommend first you read “Standards for pile burning”, available online with a quick search. Every year, the RFS will get called to pile burns that have gone “wrong” in some way. People are often unprepared for the amount of heat that can be generated, or a burn that got so much bigger and even damage property, power lines or escapes the property. Wearing the wrong clothing can have disastrous consequences too, especially synthetics melting to your skin and radiant heat burns. The information is there to protect you, your family and your property!

Just as important to be prepared for the fire danger period, now is the time to prepare for the cooler temperatures when your fire fighting equipment isn’t required. When freezing temperatures arrive, water can be your enemy to water pumps. Ice forming can expand and damage or destroy your portable pump, so look for the drain plug, remove it and put it in a safe place. A fire fighting pump is an expensive asset which should last for decades if maintained and protected from the elements. Remember also to remove that old fuel from the fuel tank and carburettor for best results.

Tonight’s training for the 16 members had a run through of the Lake George District Category 6 bulk water tanker. The tanker has a capacity of 9000 litres and has many features including a bumper mounted monitor (water cannon) which can be operated within the cabin with an electric joystick. The water spray can easily reach distances up to 30 metres! The Cat 6 tanker is an asset available to all brigades in the Lake George District and has endless possibilities, but best suited for large incidents requiring large amounts of water, saving tankers having to travel distances and time to replenish their water tanks. We thank the crew from Bungendore RFS for taking the time out this evening to show its capabilities!

There are a few residents taking advantage of end of the fire danger period already and started their pile burns early. You have a 6 month window of permit free planned burns. Remember when the fire danger period starts in October, you aren’t guaranteed of getting a permit, in fact most permits were refused or suspended last season! Don’t wait until the last minute to get your pile burns done. Notifications with the RFS are mandatory and required 365 days a year as well as notifying all your neighbours!

The official end to the Fire Danger Period is midnight tonight. A fire permit is not required for a planned burn in the open from April 1 until October 1.
HOWEVER, “Burn notifications” are mandatory for 365 days a year. You MUST notify on the RFS portal AND notify ALL your adjoining neighbours at least 24 hours prior to lighting your fire.
Please ensure when you are notifying us of a planned burn, you use the following QR link or a quick internet search “Notify the RFS” or “Burn notification” will get you to the RFS portal.
Failure to notify can result in a fine of up to $1100, and often leads to unnecessary call-outs of local RFS volunteer brigades, wasting valuable time and resources that could be used for real emergencies.

The weather cleared today for the annual Bywong car boot sale. Again the brigade was involved with parking the sellers and buyers, and our Community Engagement stall. With the end of the fire danger period almost upon us, it was an opportunity for residents to ask what they can do over the next 6 months to prepare for the next fire season, and what legal requirements are needed when burning off.
