Women for Wagga City Council

Women for Wagga City Council We campaign for women to have better (equal!) representation on Council. We are not anti-men - we are pro-equality, diversity and inclusion.

This page promotes gender equality, particularly inclusive leadership in our local area. Women make up 51% of this community, but hold few seats at the governmental decision-making table. We encourage women to run in winnable positions in all government elections, particularly local government. This page profiles women candidates, advocates for the issues most relevant to women, and generates disc

ussion in the community about informed decision making by voters. Women have a voice and women need a seat at the table. No-one needs to speak on our behalf. We want to ultimately see a representative Council body that genuinely reflects the diversity in our community: gender, age, cultural backgrounds just for starters.

Congratulations to the new City of Wagga Wagga councillors - the most women ever elected to the representative body and in fact a majority with 5 of the 9 representatives being women.

Perhaps we will even see the city's first woman mayor before the end of the council term?

“Baw Baw’s Future is Equal!

A call to action from Baw Baw residents for fairness and equality.

Our vision is equality for all, regardless of gender, culture, age, sexuality and/or ability.
Violence against women including, sexual assault and family violence, is both a cause and a consequence of gender inequality.
Equality for all is not a current reality and all steps towards equality are important, including how we name our places – our streets, landmarks, parks and monuments. Lack of women’s visibility and agency in leadership contributes to an unequal society.

Acknowledging and celebrating women’s, as well as men’s, achievements is a way of building an equal society. Globally and locally, too few public places are named after women.
The Place and Feature Naming Policy adopted by Baw Baw Council on 6 March 2024, with its 70% gender target, is a positive move towards fair and equal representation. We are proud that Baw Baw Shire Council have demonstrated their understanding of this barrier to gender equality and have recognised the importance of addressing this issue in our local communities.

Three Councillors are now moving to rescind this policy. We see this as a step away from the fairness that our community expects and deserves.

If you also feel strongly about this, standing up and taking action will help. Here’s how:

1. Write to Mayor McCabe and the supportive councillors expressing your gratitude, solidarity, and support.
2. Encourage the opposing councillors to endorse the policy and recognise the positive impact on gender equality and violence prevention.
3. Join us at the council meeting on Wednesday 3 April at 12:45pm at the West Gippsland Art Centre to observe the recission motion discussion and/or to speak for three minutes on this crucial issue. You can also make submissions in other ways shown here Council Meetings (bawbawshire.vic.gov.au)

Remember that time when the Wagga media referred to Mayor Dallas Tout as “Wagga parent and councillor” when talking about important local issues? That’s right, it hasn’t happened. Perhaps they used it when referring to Cr Dan Hayes, or Cr Tim Koschel, both of whom have spoken publicly of their role as fathers? No, not them either. Can’t recall the term being used in relation to Cr Rod Kendall or former Crs Greg Conkey or Paul Funnell.

But just a few weeks in to the job, The Daily Advertiser has clearly reminded us that Cr Georgie Davies is a parent (first) and councillor (second).

While this may seem a small thing, make no mistake that gendered frames of reporting are so common that we may not notice, or easily dismiss it. The effect, however, is to frame our thinking about the way this Councillor approaches issues and their competency for the role. The issue Cr Davies raises IS important and is shaped by her lived experience, but her voice should be heard because she is an elected representative speaking about a topic many people want addressed.

Yes, Cr Davies is a parent, but why are women leaders more often than not described in their personal/domestic capacity in a professional context when the same standard is not applied to men?

Come on, DA. We deserved better reporting that this.

We received a great response from the community to our recent online Playground Survey!

400+ residents had their say, with more shade cover at our play spaces and a water park topping the list of what they'd like to see for the city and surrounding villages🌲💧🤸‍♂️

Great to see the previous work on this strategy achieving progress.

The future of Lake Albert is looking bright as Council continues to work towards the design and construction of a water pipeline.

The pipeline will ensure water can be pumped from the Murrumbidgee River to maintain water levels in the lake through the hot and dry months.

The new State Minister for Water recently endorsed the plan which was signed with the NSW Government early last year.
