🌏 World Environment Day 🌱

Understanding our local environment helps us grow food, care for nature, and take meaningful climate action.

This is why the Sustainable Wagga team monitors endangered species like Squirrel Gliders through nest box audits, fauna surveys, and mapping wildlife corridors. These efforts guide us in protecting vulnerable species and building a sustainable future.

Stay tuned for updates from our nest box program!

An Australian Native Garden that is both beautiful and achievable? Yes please!

Are you a wildlife whisperer? Landscape designer Emily Rubira created this ‘Native Whispers’ boutique garden for the Melbourne International Flower and Garden Show, to demonstrate that designing with native plants is both beautiful and achievable. She wanted to encourage people to see the possibilities of native flowers – not just for their colour and texture, but to welcome native bees, birds and insects. What do you do to attract wildlife into your garden? For more highlights (and some great inspiration), grab our June issue, out now!

🚲World Bicycle Day🚲

Let's celebrate the humble bicycle and its power to provide affordable, sustainable transport worldwide!

Since 2016, Wagga’s Active Travel Plan has created 12 major cycle links covering 50+ km, connecting nearly 90% of schools within one block of a safe cycling path.

The 31st May is World Parrot Day in 2026, a day that celebrates these bright and colourful birds and draws attention to challenges they face.

Wagga is home to native parrots, including the Superb Parrot and the Swift Parrot.

🦜Superb Parrot

The Superb Parrot is a medium-sized bright green parrot that nests in tree hollows in forests and in the woodlands of River Red Gums along the Murrumbidgee, and forages in Grassy Box Woodland as far as 10km away, travelling between nesting and foraging habitats each day. They are currently listed as a vulnerable species under Commonwealth and NSW legislation, due to a range of threats related to habitat loss, invasive species, and illegal shooting and trapping (Source: NSW Office of Environment & Heritage, 2024)

🦜Swift Parrot

The Swift Parrot is a small bright green parrot that migrates across the Bass Strait from Tasmania to the South-Eastern Australian mainland at speeds of up to 88km/h. They forage on the nectar of flowering eucalypts, as well as seeds and flowers, travelling in a northerly direction over Winter in search of food, including in Wagga and the Riverina. Unfortunately, the Swift Parrot is listed as Endangered in NSW, and Critically Endangered under Commonwealth legislation, due to a range of threats related to habitat loss and change, disease, invasive species, and a wide range of climate change related impacts on the environment (Source: NSW Office of Environment & Heritage, 2022)

🌱Tiny Forest Working Bee – Recap👩‍🌾

On a beautiful autumn morning, our local community rolled up their sleeves and did some maintenance of the Tiny Forest located at Wilks Ave, Kooringal. Over two productive hours, volunteers tacked an impressive amount of weeding - 740kg of weeds removed - and refreshed the mulch across the beds. More mulch will be added in coming weeks to build it up to a 12cm depth helping keep future weeds at bay.

Planted in August 2025, the Tiny Forest has flourished, with many plants now quadruple their original size. If you haven't visited yet, now is the perfect time. A newly installed seat nestled within one of the beds offers a peaceful spot to pause, take in the greenery and enjoy the views. A heartfelt thank you to everyone who came along and contributed their time and energy.
