NSW SES Wagga Wagga Unit

NSW SES Wagga Wagga Unit NSW SES is the combat agency for floods and storms. It is made up almost entirely of volunteers, with 229 units located throughout the state.

The NSW State Emergency Service (SES) is an emergency, preparedness and response service dedicated to assisting the community of NSW. The units comprise of approximately 10,000 volunteer members, who are easily identified by their distinctive orange overalls. While our core responsibilities are for flood, storm and tsunami operations, the NSW SES also provides support to general rescue efforts in

the State. This includes Road Crash Rescue (RCR), Vertical Rescue (VR), Urban Search and Rescue (USAR), evidence searches (both metropolitan and rural) and other forms of specialist rescue that may be required due to local threats. Volunteers in a number of isolated communities have also been trained as Community First Responders by the Ambulance Service of New South Wales. The Service's trained rescuers also support the full-time emergency services during major disasters. The NSW SES assists other emergency services when they are performing major operations. These services include the NSW Police Force, the NSW Rural Fire Service, Fire and Rescue NSW and the Ambulance Service of NSW. The NSW SES also partners with local communities through Community Engagement programs like FloodSafe, StormSafe and TsunamiSafe. These programs are supported by strategies and resources, are delivered locally through a range of activities and events and are a priority for the NSW SES. The aim is to engage at-risk communities on preparedness, response and recovery measures so that there is no loss of life and impacts caused by these events are minimised. This in turn builds community resilience to floods, storms and tsunami. For further information visit the NSW SES website at http://www.ses.nsw.gov.au/

5 fun facts about the NSW SES:

🚨 1. The NSW SES has more than 10,500 volunteers spread across hundreds of units across the state. That's enough people to fill a small country town!

🌧️ 2. Storms keep the SES busiest.
While many people associate the SES with floods, storm damage jobs such as leaking roofs, fallen trees, and damaged buildings make up a huge portion of callouts every year.

🚁 3. SES volunteers can be deployed anywhere in Australia.
When major disasters strike interstate, NSW SES volunteers often pack their bags and head off to help communities hundreds or even thousands of kilometres away.

πŸ“± 4. The famous number is 132 500.
Need help with flood or storm damage? The SES number is 132 500. It's one of the most recognised emergency numbers in NSW after Triple Zero.

🐨 5. SES volunteers rescue more than just people.
Over the years, volunteers have helped rescue everything from dogs and cats to horses, cattle, and native wildlife trapped by storms and floods. Some SES members have stories that sound like they're straight out of a movie!

Bonus Fun Fact πŸŽ‰
The orange uniform wasn't chosen by accident. The bright colour makes SES volunteers highly visible during storms, floods, road crashes, and search operations, helping keep both volunteers and the public safer.

Congratulations to Daniel Keogh, our one and only Leading Senior Operator, on his enlistment in the Army Reserves this week.
It takes a special person to volunteer in the SES let alone duplicate that service on a Part Time basis serving your country.
Well done mate.

Happy Wear Orange Wednesday to all our NSW SES volunteers and families.
Extended thoughts for all volunteers in all fields and their support networks.

The Wagga Wagga unit celebrated the day with a low drag dinner with some presentations, promotions and banter.

None of what we do would be possible without the support of our paid staff and I thank the Southern Zone staff for their kind words today.

We are deeply saddened by the tragic incident off Ballina Bar overnight.

Not only for the loss of life from Marine Rescue NSW but also the loss of life from the vessel they were responding to.

This is a reminder of what emergency services can face every time they answer a call for help, frequently in the most challenging and dangerous conditions.

We extend our sincere condolences to the families, friends and members of Marine Rescue NSW, as well as all those affected by this tragedy.

Our thoughts are with you all during this difficult time.πŸ’™πŸ’™

Last night some of our dedicated volunteers were called to respond to a hazardous situation, putting their training, teamwork and critical thinking skills into action when it mattered most.

Working effectively and safely, the crew supported a local community member through what was a challenging and stressful incident. With a calm and professional approach, they assessed the risks, secured the area, performed protective tasks and ensured everyone involved was kept informed and reassured throughout.

We’re proud to have worked alongside Fire & Rescue NSW to bring the situation to a safe resolution. Strong collaboration like this is what helps keep our community safe.

A big thank you and shoutout our incredible volunteers Ado, Jacob, Jude, Dan, and Bronwyn for their ongoing commitment, and to our partner agency for their support and teamwork.

A shoutout also the the amazing arborists from Enviro Trees for another job well done!
