🚌 Students travelling by school bus, please note the following times:
▪ 4:45pm – DEPART VHHS (Rec Centre Car Park)
▪ 6:15pm – Arrive at Convention Centre
▪ 11:00pm – DEPART Convention Centre
▪ 12:30am – Approx arrival back at VHHS

2026 AUSTRALIAN OF THE YEAR BREAKFAST

A small group of VHHS STEM students were given the unique opportunity to attend the 2026 Australian of the Year Breakfast at the Convention Centre.

✨This year’s keynote speaker was Australian of the Year, Katherine Bennell-Pegg, the first Australian to qualify as an astronaut through Australia’s national space program.
Chosen from more than 22,500 applicants, Katherine completed Basic Astronaut Training in 2024 at the European Astronaut Centre as its first international candidate. A lifelong space enthusiast and accomplished engineer, she has contributed to multiple missions and now travels across Australia inspiring the next generation to explore careers in the country’s rapidly growing space industry.

Students also heard from the 2026 South Australian Australians of the Year, whose work is creating meaningful change in our communities:
✨Malcolm 'Mac' Benoy | Meteorological researcher contributing to global climate change research
✨James Currie | Award-winning sound designer who has helped shape South Australia’s film industry
✨Chloe Wyatt-Jasper | Youth mental health advocate who secured $5 million in funding for improved services
✨Ayesha Fariha Safdar | Founder of the Adelaide Pakistani Women's Association, empowering migrant and refugee women

SCHOOL TV | Drinking & Alcohol

Alcohol is one of the most commonly used substances among young people, making it an important topic for families to address early and often.

From the primary years onwards, children are exposed to messages about alcohol through social situations, media and online content. Starting age-appropriate conversations early can help build healthy attitudes, strengthen trust and make later discussions during adolescence easier and more effective.

As children grow older, curiosity, peer influence and increasing independence can increase the likelihood of experimentation. Research shows that strong family communication, clear expectations and positive role modelling are key protective factors in helping young people make safer and healthier choices.

This edition of SchoolTV explores the impact of alcohol on children and adolescents and offers practical strategies to help families navigate this important topic with confidence and care.
