This week our Library team visited the National Trust – Victor Harbor for a tour of their collections and resources.

Our guide Richard showed us displays and exhibits about the local First Nations Ngarrindjeri/Ramindjeri people, the early whaling days, the rail industry, and the Old Customs House museum.

The local National Trust branch contains items from the SA Whale Centre, The South Australian Maritime Museum and two original family portraits from the Hay family that were saved from the fire at Mount Breckan. They also hold a huge collections of paper Times newspapers, photographs and other items you can use to learn more about our town or research your family history.

This tour will help our team know when to refer customers to the National Trust, but it is also a fun outing for locals and tourists to enjoy – why not plan a visit?

At bedtime, while changing a nappy, or during play, talk to your little one about all the different things you do together over the day. Ask simple questions, or turn your everyday adventures into a story.

‘Remember when we got caught in the rain?’, ‘and then after lunch we went to the library!’ Pause between sentences, giving your child space to respond with their own additions, even if it’s just a smile!

These simple back-and-forth conversations are the building blocks of their development – strengthening your bond and creating lasting memories.
