Training night recap πŸš’πŸ”₯

Last night we worked through our annual BA (breathing apparatus) skills maintenance drills. This is mandatory training that makes sure our BA operators are sharp on the core skills needed for structure fires and other incidents. To add a bit of extra realism, we also folded in a car fire drill.

Alongside this, some of our newer members took the opportunity to familiarise themselves with wearing a BA set, building confidence and preparing for future training.

We also loved welcoming our first couple of prospective members along for a 'come-and-try'-type session. They jumped in with both feet - they took their first ride in a fire truck, learned some basic hosework and got involved in the drill in a defensive role.

A great night of people having a go at something new, backed up by experienced members supporting, mentoring and sharing their knowledge πŸ‘πŸš’

Had an amazing time at the Victor Harbor Primary school twilight fair tonight with our truck and some helpers. It was great to see so many excited kids getting a chance to sq**rt some water and explore the fire truck. Big thanks to everyone who stopped by to chat and learn about fire safety!

πŸš’πŸ”§ This week at training we got hands-on with the suite of power tools on our new 34P appliance. Being confident and safe with these tools is critical - especially when they may be needed for forcible entry in fire conditions.

We put the quickcut saw, angle grinder, drills, shears, nibbler and more through their paces, with plenty of opportunity to practise and ask questions.

A huge thanks to firefighters Tyson and Jono for stepping up and running the session, and to South Coast Sand and Civil for donating scrap materials for us to train on!

πŸš’β€οΈ A huge Thank You to Our Community! β€οΈπŸš’

We would like to express a great big thank you to the wonderful residents of Nettle Hill Road for their generous care basket and the beautiful card made by the kids, featuring a drawing of our fire truck! Your thoughtfulness and support mean the world to us, especially after our recent efforts at the fires in Deep Creek and Tooperang.

It's moments like these that remind us of the strong bond we share with our community. Thank you for standing with us and for your support. Together, we make a difference!

Stay safe, and we are always here for you!

Last week for our regular Monday training we were lucky to have Paul Unsworth join us for a bushfire behaviour session.

Recently retired as the Fleurieu District Ranger with National Parks, Paul is an incredible source of local knowledge, with decades of experience managing prescribed burns and working alongside CFS at bushfires across (and beyond) the region.

We headed out to Spring Mount Conservation Park, where Paul brought the bushfire triangle (fuel, weather and topography) to life. Seeing pristine and recently burnt areas side-by-side enabled some real insights into fuel loads and how different parts of the landscape might burn under varying conditions.

It was really valuable and engaging session - thanks so much for sharing your time and expertise, Paul. πŸš’πŸŒΏ

We love seeing our trucks out in the world doing good things πŸ”₯πŸš’

Huge thanks to the RFS Loftus Brigade for this post from the Deep Creek fires – we hope you enjoyed having a go in our appliance!

Jump over to their page for heaps of fantastic photos from the Deep Creek fireground.

Shoutout to the RFS members from Sandy Point, Illawong, Casula and Davidson brigades who made up the HV34 composite crew.

We’d also like to sincerely thank all of the NSW, Victorian and WA crews who have travelled over to support local brigades. Your professionalism, experience and willingness to help mean a lot to our members and our community.

Over the weekend, our Group Officer Graham volunteered as Divisional Commander, overseeing the entire fireground, while our Captain Emily took on the role of Alpha Sector Commander. Both were incredibly grateful for the opportunity, the experience and the outstanding support from everyone working on the ground.

Finally, a massive thank you once again to all the people – including Hindmarsh Valley members – who have been working in so many different capacities this week. Whether on the trucks, in leadership roles, or supporting behind the scenes, every contribution counts. πŸ’›πŸ”₯

** A newer update has been issued. For the latest information visit www.cfs.sa.gov.au/incidents **

Incident Update - Deep Creek Fire

The Deep Creek Fire was officially declared to be contained late yesterday, however personnel from all over Australia continue to work on this fire. Firefighters are extinguishing hotspots in steep, heavily vegetated and inaccessible country ahead of a potential day of increased weather on Wednesday. Incident Management personnel also continue to support and guide the work that is occurring on the fireground.

A contained fire means the spread of the fire has halted but it may still be burning freely within the perimeter of the fire. Smoke and flames may continue to be visible from this fire for a number of days. However, if the public notice any unattended fire, call Triple Zero (000).

Hazardous tree assessments are still in the process of being finalised. While several roads were recently opened, others still require assessment and work from arborists to be deemed safe to open. Please refer to traffic.sa.gov.au for the most current information. If you must travel in the area, please drive to conditions and follow directions from emergency services.

The SA Country Fire Service is grateful for the valuable contributions of our partners during this fire event. The SA Metropolitan Fire Service, State Emergency Service (SA NSW and Queensland), SA Police, Department for Environment and Water, National Parks and Wildlife, Forestry SA, SA Ambulance Service, Victorian Country Fire Authority, NSW Rural Fire Service, QLD Fire & Rescue, St John Ambulance, The District Council of Yankalilla, the Local Government Association, Salvation Army, SA Power Networks.

The Deep Creek fire is affecting local individuals, families and the wider community in many ways. If you have been impacted and would like support, you can register for a wellbeing call back from the Australian Red Cross by completing the wellbeing support registration form. This can be found on the dedicated webpage that has been created on the CFS website at cfs.sa.gov.au/deep-creek-fire, alongside ongoing updates and a link to The District Council of Yankalilla Community Resources and Support Services page.

Over the past two days, our team has been actively involved in fighting a significant fire in our neighboring area at deep creek. We’re proud to support our fellow firefighters and do what we can to protect our community.

The work has been tough, but our crews have been dedicated and determined to help where it's needed most. Thank you to everyone for your support during this critical time. Here are some photos of our team in action so far πŸš’πŸ”₯🧯

Happy New Year from Hindmarsh Valley CFS!

We've had a busy few months, responding to 4 rural fires and a structure fire since the beginning of December alone. (We've also attended a number of other incident types, and helped out on KI).

We've said 'goodbye' to our old faithful trucks HV34 and HVB34 - we hope they go well in the APY Lands and Hay Flat, respectively.

In their place, we've said 'hello' to a brand shiny new 34P, and 'ooh, you look nice' to HVA34 which has been refurbished (and rebadged HV34).

Finally, a shout out to our newbies Jesse, Lita, Bijou and Nick who are doing a great job of learning the ropes this summer!

Thanks to all of our members who have been putting in the hard yards to keep our community safe. We appreciate you! β€οΈπŸ’›
