Today I met with the Hon Rhiannon Pearce MP, Minister for Local Government, Minister for Sport and Recreation.
Together with SHLGA Executive Officer Lisa Teburea we discussed the importance of Council working together across regions, and the importance of Council and State Government collaboration.
I look forward to working with her in the future. We also talked about the Victor Harbour Sport and Recreation Precinct and she appeared to be very supportive of infrastructure that supports our growing community. It is great to have a minister for Local Government who is so supportive of councils and the work that we do. Because she comes from a rural background herself, she understands the need of rural and regional communities.
I look forward to further collaboration and partnerships.

Short-stay accommodation plays an important role in supporting tourism, local jobs and visitor choice across the Southern and Hills region.

But growth in the sector must be balanced with housing availability, fairness and community vitality.

SHLGA is asking the State Government to adopt the recommendations of the South Australian Select Committee into the Short Stay Accommodation Sector. We are calling for a sensible, statewide regulatory approach - including registration, data-sharing and clear safety standards - based on principles of equity and transparency.

We support a thriving visitor economy, alongside strong, sustainable local communities.

SHLGA is calling for long-term action in response to the 2025 Senate Algal Bloom Inquiry

This disastrous ecological event has exposed major gaps in South Australia’s monitoring and preparedness, with serious impacts for tourism, aquaculture and coastal communities across the Southern and Hills region.

We’re seeking a State commitment to:
• sustained, science-led marine monitoring and early-warning systems
• long-term resilience funding for affected industries
• a dedicated fund to support councils responding to slow-onset ecological events

Building resilience now will protect communities, industries and ecosystems into the future.

SHLGA has lodged its 2026–27 Federal Budget Submission, calling for targeted Commonwealth investment to support sustainable growth, productivity and resilience across the Southern and Hills region.

Focused on six priority areas – from community-ready growth and wastewater infrastructure to local roads, freight and digital connectivity, climate resilience, and regional jobs – the submission makes a strong case for place-based, locally delivered funding and a shift away from fragmented, short-term grants.

The Southern and Hills region relies on safe, reliable transport to support our communities, industries and visitors.

That’s why SHLGA is seeking a clear funding commitment and delivery timeline for the South Coast Freight Corridor. Freight volumes from agriculture, fisheries, timber and food production continue to grow, yet heavy vehicles are still forced onto local roads shared with commuters and tourists. This creates safety risks, congestion and delays - especially through busy coastal towns.

The South Coast Freight Corridor would separate freight from local traffic, improve safety and amenity, strengthen supply chains for the Fleurieu and Kangaroo Island, and support a regional economy worth more than $14 billion each year. It’s a practical investment in productivity, resilience and liveability for one of South Australia’s fastest-growing regions.

Our region needs better public transport - now and for the long term.

SHLGA is advocating for more frequent and reliable bus services, better connections between towns, and expanded on-demand transport across the Adelaide Hills, Fleurieu and Kangaroo Island. We are also calling for planning and investment in long-term transit solutions for Mount Barker and Victor Harbor to support growth, cut congestion, and give growing communities real alternatives to car travel.

Our region is growing - and that growth needs to be done right.

The Southern & Hills Local Government Association is advocating for Community-Ready Growth Funding to ensure new and growing communities across the Adelaide Hills, Fleurieu Peninsula and Kangaroo Island have the infrastructure, services and jobs they need to thrive.

That means timely investment in roads, public transport, water and wastewater, health, education, open spaces, community facilities and local employment so growth delivers liveable neighbourhoods, not long delays and added pressure on existing communities.

With tens of thousands of new residents expected across the region, we’re calling for coordinated State investment to support well-planned growth that benefits current and future residents alike.
