( Certificate III in HORTICULTURE)

1) Description:
You will learn how to establish and maintain plants and structures / features in gardens & parks; use horticultural machinery and equipment; apply pest, w**d and disease management techniques; establish and maintain irrigation and drainage systems; and identify plants, products and treatments.
The Certificate III in Horticulture graduates could go for positions in the Horticulture industries such as working in nurseries, country clubs and resorts, council services, and visitor attractions such as theme parks.
Once complete, you can develop your skills further by working towards B*H’s Diploma of Horticulture.
2) Entry Requirements:
All students must have successfully completed Year 12 or equivalent qualification / certificate and received / gained at least a 55% pass mark in the English Subject / or be able to demonstrate English language proficiency at the time of enrolment. A student can demonstrate English language proficiency by taking IELTS exam (minimum score 5.0) or by demonstrating the reading and writing skills to the Brisbane College of Horticulture (B*H).
3) Program Duration:
This course will run for 40 weeks over 12 months (50 weeks including holidays) comprise 20 hours a week (3 days) of face to face delivery and 4 hours a week of distance study. There will be holiday breaks every 10 weeks for 2 weeks.
The home distance study component of the course will never exceed 25% of a unit or course. Students are expected to make use of this time to further their education. The College will be available should you wish to utilise the premises for the distance study. All learners receive a set of manuals that form part of the program. If you have any concerns about the methods of study please speak to the College prior to enrolment.

Requirements for Qualification
To successfully complete the course, students must undertake all units, sit and be deemed competent in all assessment tasks.
Students are required to actively participate in all learning activities during the course.
5) Method of Study:
The majority of lessons are conducted in the classroom / nursery environment. The College may be available should you wish to utilise the premises outside normal study hours for additional study time.
All learners receive a set of Manuals that form part of the program. These include an interactive Disk to help you with your studies.

7) Course Schedule:
Participants will be required to attend four sessions per week. Classes will vary however you will be informed at enrolment what sessions you will be required to attend. These sessions will remain constant throughout your course.
8) Personal Safety Requirements:
The following items represent the minimum standard of dress and equipment, which will provide adequate protection against certain hazards in the work environment and ensure compliance with the Workplace Health and Safety Act.
All students will be given these items on the first day of College attendance:
• Protective footwear to comply with AS2210 - Steel capped boots
• Protective clothing to comply with the Institute Safety Policy - Neat casual clothing including a broad brimmed hat
• Ear Muffs or Plugs and Non-fogging Safety Glasses
• Sunglasses, Sunscreen and Water bottle
9) Travel Requirements:
During the course, you will be required to travel between campuses. This will be explained at induction however the cost will be approximately $2.00 per return trip. It is expected that you will be required to travel approximately 20 times between the 2 campuses.
Once during the course, you will be required to travel from Brisbane to Coffs Harbour to experience an alternate style nursery. Coffs Harbour is about 400km south of Brisbane and the cost to travel there will be about $90 return. Accommodation will be provided at the nursery and costs will be about $15 per night.
10) Course Assessment:
During your course, you will be required to sit a range of assessments. These will include both practical and written. Your trainers will provide you sufficient information prior to each assessment activity to ensure you understand your requirements.
Learning and assessment support assistance will be given to participants who experience learning difficulties.
11) Recognition of Prior Learning:
Recognition of prior learning (RPL) may be possible for part of or the entire course. Past training, formal and informal and/or experience can be assessed and matched against the units of competency within this course.

12) Course Costs:
International Students: $12,000/year
