Today, Tuncurry Rural Fire Brigade hosted a sector training day, welcoming crews from Firefly Rural Fire Brigade - NSW RFS, Nabiac Rural Fire Brigade, NSW RFS - Diamond Beach and Rainbow Flat Rural Fire Brigade.

Led by our Group Officer Silas, crews worked through FireMapper, ICON, ATHENA and MDTs, looking at how these tools can assist with fireground awareness, communication and decision-making.

Our Senior Deputy Captain took crews through FireMapper, including taking photos, drawing fire edges and adding symbols and labels.

Our group officer then demonstrated ICON and ATHENA, showing how they can help crews understand what is happening around them.

To finish, one of our members took crews through the features of our MDTs and answered questions on their use. Crews then enjoyed lunch supplied by Tuncurry Brigade before a quick tutorial on updating crew statuses using the buttons on our radios. đź“»

We received some great feedback from those who attended, and it was fantastic to see crews sharing knowledge and learning from each other.

A massive thank you to everyone who attended and helped organise the day. A very special thank you also goes to Mid Coast Taree Communications Brigade for sending us some training incidents!!🚨

Tonight, Tuncurry RFB was joined by our friends from Fire and Rescue NSW Station 295 Forster for a great night of joint training at Tuncurry Station.

Our members were put through a range of practical activities, including:

🔹 WEPRO+ decontamination system — working through the decontamination process to ensure our members understand each stage and that we all go home clean and safe after a fire.

🔹 Haul party operations — learning the process, terminology and techniques involved when assisting with hauling rescue operators and casualties during a rescue.

🔹 Ambulance assists — practicing different carrying techniques and looking at the equipment available on Fire and Rescue appliances that can assist us when working alongside NSW Ambulance.

🔹 Horizontal standpipe & Cleveland rolls — learning when these systems can be useful, the scenarios they can assist with and how to correctly set them up at fires.

We were also joined by members from Pacific Palms Rural Fire Brigade, Green Point and NSW RFS - Diamond Beach, making it a fantastic opportunity to train alongside neighbouring brigades and strengthen our ability to work together.

All of our members came away from tonight having learnt something new, and we’d like to thank Forster Fire and Rescue for running such a valuable training session and sharing their knowledge with us.

It’s nights like these that help ensure we’re prepared to work effectively together when it matters most.

🚨 SMOKE IN THE AREA🚨

Residents of Tuncurry and Forster are advised that an increase in smoke may be visible throughout the day, with smoke coming from the Minimbah/Nabiac area.

Crews are currently on scene conducting backburning operations as part of efforts to contain the fire. These operations are expected to result in a significant increase in smoke across the surrounding areas.

Residents are reminded that smoke may reduce visibility and can impact air quality. Please take care, particularly when driving, and avoid areas where smoke is present where possible.

Today, while attending a community event, Tuncurry RFB was called to reports of a fire on Wallis Island.

Working alongside our friends at NSW SES Forster Pacific Palms Unit, we responded with their boat as well as our Category 1 tanker. To help establish the location of the fire, our Category 1 tanker travelled to Aerodrome Road, Nabiac, while the boat attempted to access the reported location from the water.

Once our truck arrived at Nabiac, it was confirmed that the fire was not on Wallis Island, but was located in the Minimbah area.

Our boat crew worked from the river and extinguished the section of fire along the river’s edge. The boat crew then returned to the station before heading to the fire in our Category 7 tanker.

Smoke from the fire may continue to be visible over the coming days. Residents are encouraged to monitor conditions in their area and stay up to date with the latest information through the Hazards Near Me app.

We would also like to thank our friends from NSW RFS - Minimbah Brigade, Rural Fire Service - Coolongolook Brigade, Nabiac Rural Fire Brigade and Wallaby Joe RFS - Rural Fire Service Wingham for their attendance and assistance at the incident.

Thank you to everyone who assisted today. 👨‍🚒🚒

Advice: Aerodrome Road Fire, Minimbah (Mid-Coast LGA) – Monitor Conditions: Those in the vicinity of the fire.

Firefighters are working to contain a bush fire burning approximately 4 kilometers east of Tuncurry and on the western side of Wallis Lake. The fire is burning in a south westerly direction towards the Coolongolook River. While there is no immediate danger, those in the vicinity of the fire should monitor conditions and stay up to date in case the situation changes.

Smoke is highly visible from both Forster and Tuncurry.

Crews will undertake backburning this afternoon to contain the fire, which will see an increase in smoke.

Today, Tuncurry Rural Fire Brigade celebrated 70 years of service to our community, with brigade members, past and present, coming together to mark this incredible milestone.

Our District Manager, Superintendent Ugo Tolone, opened the ceremony, followed by words from Alison Penfold MP for Lyne and Mayor Claire Pontin. We were also taken through some of the brigade’s history by Captain Mick, Senior Deputy Captain Curtis and President Mat. In attendance as well was Tanya Thompson MP.

We also had the privilege of celebrating another very special milestone — Bob Berriman’s 70 years of service to the Tuncurry Rural Fire Brigade.

Bob was one of the brigade’s foundational members, joining in 1956. During his 20 years as Captain, Bob was instrumental in the development of the brigade, including the build of our first heavy tanker, as well as our first catering and communications vehicles.

It was an incredible day celebrating the people, history and dedication that have shaped Tuncurry RFB over the past 70 years. An event like this takes a huge amount of time and effort, and we are incredibly grateful to all of our volunteers who helped bring the celebration together.

A special thank you also goes to Tunners Bakehouse for the wonderful cakes and Lumpys Nursery & Landscape Yard for the incredible plants that helped make the station look even better for the occasion. 🌿

What a celebration of 70 years of Tuncurry RFB — and of the people who have made our brigade what it is today.

📸 Stay tuned over the next few days for some extra photos from the celebration!

🏆 STATE CHAMPIONSHIPS — DONE! 🏆

What a fantastic weekend for the Tuncurry RFB team! Two big days of competition, plenty of laughs, new friendships and memories we’ll be taking home with us.

We’re incredibly proud to have taken out two 2nd places across the weekend — DubVegas Open and High Stakes, No Breaks. A fantastic result and a reflection of the hard work, dedication and teamwork our crew has put in.

A huge thank you to everyone who came out to support us throughout the weekend, and to those cheering us on from home. Your support means so much to our team. ❤️

It was also fantastic to see our Hunter Area buddies, NSW RFS - Vacy Brigade, take out 2nd place overall! A massive thank you to the Vacy crew for being so welcoming and supportive all weekend. We’ve loved sharing the weekend with you!

And of course, a big shoutout to our NSW Rural Fire Service - Central Coast District Composite crew — the Big Boys! Thank you for all the giggles, laughs and good times. Congratulations on your trophies!

👏 Congratulations to Oakville Brigade on taking out 1st place and Catherine Field on 3rd place overall.

Finally, a huge congratulations to all the Junior teams for their efforts throughout the weekend. A massive thank you to all the organisers, marshals and, of course, our favourites — the catering crews! You all help make these championships what they are.
