In December 2025, the community of Koolewong right here on the Central Coast was impacted by a devastating bushfire.

Residents Elise, Paul & Chui Yin share how they prepared ahead of the fire, the conversations they had with their families and the steps they took to get ready.

On a day of Extreme Fire Danger Rating, within just 20 minutes, 12 homes were destroyed with many more under imminent threat. By the end of the day, 16 homes would be lost and the community would be forever changed.

Preparation starts long before a fire arrives. Find out how you can prepare for a bush or grass fire at www.rfs.nsw.gov.au and create your bushfire survival plan today at www.myfireplan.com.au

Today marks the official start of the bush fire season, with the Bush Fire Danger Period beginning in most NSW Local Government Areas.

If you’re planning on conducting a burn, you’ll require a fire permit from your local Fire Control Centre or brigade. Fire permits help ensure fire is used safely and reduces the danger to you, your property and the community.

Residents and land holders must know the rules when it comes to the use of fire. Along with having the required fire permits, you need to notify your local fire authority and neighbours of your intent to burn at least 24 hours in advance.

For more information on the Bush Fire Danger Period and requirements around safe burning, visit our website: www.rfs.nsw.gov.au/BFDP

💛 R U OK? 💛

At Tuggerah RFS, we know how important it is to look after and support each other. Today is a reminder to stop and take a moment to check in with your family, friends, mates, work mates or whoever it may be. A simply question could open up a conversation that someone really needs.

If someone you know isn’t okay, remind them they don’t have to go through it alone.

Let’s all look out for each other, not just today but everyday.💛

🔥🚨 IF A BUSHFIRE WAS HEADING TOWARDS YOUR HOME RIGHT NOW… WOULD YOU KNOW WHAT TO DO? 🚨🔥

Bushfires don’t wait for you to be ready.

We’ve seen it happen right here on the Central Coast — fires can start quickly, spread rapidly and cause devastating damage.

The recent fire at Calga is another reminder that we don’t have to be in the bushfire danger period for a bushfire to take off.

⚠️ Don’t wait until you see smoke. Prepare NOW.

🏠 Is your property prepared?
🔥 Do you know when you would leave and where you would go?
