A statewide Fire Permit Period started at 2am today, Thursday, 29 October, 2026.

This means fire permits are now required across the state.

If you have a property and you wish to conduct a burn (larger than 1 cubic metre in size) on your property, you will need to apply for a free fire permit, by submitting an application online at https://www.fire.tas.gov.au/total-fire-bans-fire-permits-burn-registrations/ or free-call 1800 000 699.

During a Fire Permit Period a permit is required by individuals intending to light a fire for burning vegetation or for a similar purpose. Permits are also required for fires at a sawmill or factory for burning wood waste or other flammable material.

Fires for cooking, warmth or disposal of garden waste do not require a permit provided that:
• It is one cubic metre or less in size.
• The fire is not lit in peat, humus or marram grass.
• The fire is attended by a responsible adult at all times until it is extinguished.
• All flammable material is removed for at least three metres radius from the fire.

Reminder: All fires lit in the open at any time of the year should be registered with the Tasmania Fire Service online via https://www.fire.tas.gov.au/total-fire-bans-fire-permits-burn-registrations/ or free-call 1800 000 699.

Remember:
• Some Local Government authorities prohibit backyard burning in residential areas.
• Fire may only be lit with the authority of the landowner.
• Fires must not be allowed to spread to neighbouring property.
• Neighbours should be informed of an intention to light a fire.

Campfires will be banned in national parks and reserves in the following municipalities from 2am on Monday 26 October 2026:

Break O'Day, Brighton, Central Highlands, Clarence, Derwent Valley, Dorset, Flinders, George Town, Glamorgan-Spring Bay (including Maria Island), Glenorchy, Hobart, Huon Valley, Kingborough (including Bruny Island), Latrobe, Launceston, Northern Midlands, Sorell, Southern Midlands, Tasman and West Tamar.

The bans apply to campfires, pot fires and other solid fuel stoves. Gas stoves and gas barbecues are permitted.

Preventing human-caused bushfires is a shared responsibility. Following campfire rules helps protect lives, communities, and Tasmania’s unique natural and cultural values.

Fuel reduction burns are being conducted across Tasmania when conditions are suitable.

Not sure if the smoke you can see is from a planned burn or a bushfire?

📱 Check TasALERT for current incidents and warnings.
🔥 If there is a bushfire affecting your area, warnings will provide information about what is happening and what action you need to take to stay safe.
🔥 Fuel Reduction Burns will be clearly displayed with an estimated duration and area to be burnt

🚒 If there is any fire activity causing you concern please report it to the TFS by calling triple zero (000).

🚒🤝 A Fantastic Night at the Station! 🤝🚒

Last night, our Brigade had the absolute pleasure of hosting members from Spring Bay Rotary Club at the station.

It was a great opportunity to connect, share stories, and talk about what we do. Brigade Chief Chris Izzard spoke to the group about our emergency capabilities, as well as the proud 85 year history of our Brigade and how we have grown over the years.

Our guests also got a first-hand look at our:
• 🚒 Emergency vehicles
• ⚙️ Specialised equipment
• 🏢 Station facilities

Two of our crew members also put our hydraulic cutters and spreaders to work by demonstrating our Road Crash Rescue (RCR) tools and skills🛠️🚒

To top off a wonderful evening, the Rotary team kindly provided a fantastic BBQ which was thoroughly enjoyed by everyone in attendance.

Thank you so much to Spring Bay Rotary for your support, your keen interest in our work, and of course, for the delicious food! It is community partnerships like this that keep us going strong. 💪
