It comprises of a single room. The roof is gabled and teh walls are constructed of red brick patterned with brown header bricks. In 1858, Duncan Campbell built the Travellers Rest Hotel, on the current Ryan's Hotel site. It served our community as a post office, store, church, court house and community centre. In 1914, the original hotel was pulled down and rebuilt as the Traralgon Hotel, now know
n as Ryan’s Hotel. The Ostlers House remains at the back of the existing hotel. Whilst we are unsure of the exact date that it was built, it definitely pre-dates Ryan's Hotel, and was most likely built at around the same time as the original Traveller's Rest Hotel. The term Ostlers refers to people who look after horses, and logically, it would have most likely been built before trains came through Gippsland, which was in the 1870's. The Traralgon Historical Society is in possession of a photograph of the "Ostlers House" with Registration Number 10334. Written underneath the photograph is "built before 1893". There is an Application in place by the current owners to demolish this lovely old piece of Traralgon's history. They have submitted a report to Council from a Building Surveyor/Engineer, who has indicated that the building is damaged beyond repair. This is in direct conflict with the Latrobe City Heritage Study, completed in 2007, which states on page 397, "the overall condition of the building is good". Objections had to be submitted by 10th August 2012, and a number of organisations and individuals have lodged objections. We will keep you informed of the progress of this matter on this page.
