🌊 This World Oceans Day, discover the power of art and conservation

Did you know abandoned fishing nets (known as ghost nets) are one of the biggest threats to marine life? These deadly nets drift through our oceans, trapping and harming countless creatures, including turtles, fish, and marine birds.

Opening next Saturday 20 June 2026, Ghost Nets of Pormpuraaw highlights the devastating impact of ghost nets while celebrating the resilience and creativity of the Pormpuraaw community in Cape York.

Through breathtaking sculptures created by the Pormpuraaw Art and Culture Centre, this exhibition shows how discarded nets can be transformed into powerful works of art, raising awareness about the urgent need to protect our oceans and marine ecosystems.

Happy Queensland Day! Today, we’re celebrating with our State Fossil Emblem, the incredible Muttaburrasaurus langdoni!

🦕 Muttaburrasaurus was discovered in 1963 on a Central Queensland cattle station called Roseberry Downs, near Muttaburra.
📍 It’s named after the town of Muttaburra and local grazier Doug Langdon, who made the groundbreaking discovery.
🏛️ Queensland Museum’s Alan Bartholomai and Ralph Molnar gave it its legendary name.
☘️ This mighty herbivore chomped on plants like seed ferns, ferns, and conifers with its specialised shearing teeth.
🐾 As an ornithopod dinosaur (aka "bird-footed"), it could walk upright or on all fours.
🕒 It roamed Queensland during the Cretaceous period, approximately 100 million years ago.
🚗 At seven to eight metres long, Muttaburrasaurus was about the size of two cars parked end-to-end!
🦴 Its skeleton was the first relatively complete Australian dinosaur fossil ever found, and its fossils have only been discovered in Queensland.
📜 In December 2023, this dino achieved legendary status as Queensland’s official fossil emblem under the Emblems of Queensland Act 2005.
🦖 A full replica fossil skeleton can be admired in the Dinosaurs Unearthed exhibition at Queensland Museum Kurilpa, Brisbane.

We ❤️ you, Muttaburrasaurus!

Healthy futures for Country begin with listening, learning and working together.

On World Environment Day we wanted to highlight our partnership with the ARC Centre of Excellence for Indigenous and Environmental Histories and Futures (CIEHF) - a collaboration helping shape a deeper understanding of our past to support a healthier future for Country.

Bringing together Indigenous Partner Organisations, researchers, universities and communities, CIEHF places authentic collaboration and co-designed research at its heart, recognising the importance of bringing together Indigenous knowledges and science to care for land and sea Country.

We know understanding our environment means learning from many perspectives. Through partnerships like this, we’re proud to support research that connects history, culture and environmental knowledge to help inform future generations.

On World Environment Day, we celebrate the people and partnerships working together for Country, community and the future.

As we come to the end of National Reconciliation Week 2026, it is an opportunity to reflect on the significance of Mabo Day, and how it demonstrates the important ongoing connection to country for our First Nation’s communities across Queensland.

Last week we had the honour of hosting Gail Mabo, Eddie Koiki Mabo's daughter, to share her family's lasting impact on justice and cultural transformation, and the historic decision's ongoing significance for reconciliation in Australia today.
