Happy Queensland Day! Today, we’re celebrating with our State Fossil Emblem, the incredible Muttaburrasaurus langdoni!
🦕 Muttaburrasaurus was discovered in 1963 on a Central Queensland cattle station called Roseberry Downs, near Muttaburra.
📍 It’s named after the town of Muttaburra and local grazier Doug Langdon, who made the groundbreaking discovery.
🏛️ Queensland Museum’s Alan Bartholomai and Ralph Molnar gave it its legendary name.
☘️ This mighty herbivore chomped on plants like seed ferns, ferns, and conifers with its specialised shearing teeth.
🐾 As an ornithopod dinosaur (aka "bird-footed"), it could walk upright or on all fours.
🕒 It roamed Queensland during the Cretaceous period, approximately 100 million years ago.
🚗 At seven to eight metres long, Muttaburrasaurus was about the size of two cars parked end-to-end!
🦴 Its skeleton was the first relatively complete Australian dinosaur fossil ever found, and its fossils have only been discovered in Queensland.
📜 In December 2023, this dino achieved legendary status as Queensland’s official fossil emblem under the Emblems of Queensland Act 2005.
🦖 A full replica fossil skeleton can be admired in the Dinosaurs Unearthed exhibition at Queensland Museum Kurilpa, Brisbane.
We ❤️ you, Muttaburrasaurus!
