Deer spotted in Glenvale, have you seen them??

Kerry Shine and I were at our Bio Security Advisory Committee recently and it was flagged that Officers had received complaints of wild Chital Deer (also known as spotted deer) in the Westbrook/Glenvale areas.

To understand herd numbers our team did a survey last month and counted 161 deer in a night. They were sighted in green space and along creeks and these are reasonably high numbers for urban deer. I’ve also heard of sightings at the Coles Glenvale.

We’ll continue to monitor numbers however I imagine if it gets drier we’ll see more deer and other feral animals in urban areas (like the dingo’s spotted in Middle Ridge recently).

Marking an important milestone at Cressbrook Dam this week. Work is underway and the sod officially turned. Grateful for the funding support from our Crisafulli Queensland Government. Would love to see some support from the Feds. Unfortunately I feel as a seemingly ‘safe’ blue seat country Qld and our region isn’t a priority.

AGM’s for oakey_chamber_of_commerce , Pittsworth Progress Association, Harlaxton Neighbourhood Centre with Patron Kerry Shine and Oakey QCWA (we also supported their ‘Sconversations’ at City Hall, delicious) 👌. The best part of the AGM’s is getting a snapshot of all the great things these groups have been up to, and to celebrate their outgoing and incoming community champions.

Launch of The Belinda McGowan Foundation - The Power of a Hug cuddle beds in Oakey, Clifton and Toowoomba hospitals enabling dignity and closeness/cuddles for patients at end of life. Essentially it creates a double bed in hospital so the patient can be treated and have close family members stay in regional, rural and remote Queensland (I wish they had them when my Dad was sick).

Exhibitions at The Toowoomba Gallery , ‘The Truck Cat’ book launch at the thewritegallery and the Queensland Museum Cobb+Co ‘s “Have Another Look Captain Cook!” an annual cultural program that celebrates Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander histories and cultures.

Also the launch of the tsb_enterprise TSBE Regional Development Status Report highlighting the billons of dollars of infrastructure and development in the pipeline. The future is looking great!

Shoutout to our teams getting everything ready for Carnival. Be it our gardeners, street sweepers, irrigators, mowers, events crews you name it, it’s all hands on deck. This team were topping up mulch in Queens Park this morning as toowoombaparkrun and It’s A Bloke Thing Foundation Fathers Day run ran by. I have to say the gardens are looking bloody beautiful. 👌🌼🌹🌷

Toowoomba Region and our neighbours Western Downs Regional Council Councils have worked together to deliver a landmark Community Benefit Agreement (CBA) with RWE Renewables Australia for the proposed Cattle Creek Wind Farm near Millmerran.

This is among one of the first few CBA’s signed in Qld. It’s important as it makes sure our local communities like Millmerran and Cecil Plains, who have major projects coming their way, receive transparent, accountable and lasting benefits. Benefits that will last long after the renewable project team has set-up, built their farm and moved on to the next project.

The process was shaped by local engagement, including input through Toowoomba Region’s Community Benefit Liaison Groups and consultation across both council areas. A big thanks to the Economic Development Teams of both Councils, our local liaison groups and industry for working together for long-term benefit.

It’s hard to realise the sheer size of these wind turbines. Some stand approx approx 275m from tip to ground, that’s 71 stories or equivalent to the height of the Q1 building on the Gold Coast. Each blade itself can be up to 80m long. I have my own opinions on wind and solar farms and am glad these CBA’s are now in place. Pic 2 is from a recent visit to neighbours of the Wambo Wind Farm.

I often get asked about our Ordinary Meetings (which are always anything but ordinary) so here’s a summary for August:

🚙 The Draft Toowoomba Region Parking Strategy 2026 was approved for immediate finalisation. The key strategic objectives are 1) Ease of Use, 2) Safety, 3) Plan for Growth using technology and innovation to improve customer experience and Council performance. Notably Council will move to a much simpler pay by plate model in the Toowoomba CBD and surrounding towns/precincts will have their own individual plans (eg schools, hospitals etc).

🏠 Review of regulatory frameworks relating to temporary homes, caravans and tiny homes to commence. Council Officers are to undertake analysis of alternate housing models for long-term solutions and present findings, options and recommendations at the December Ordinary Meeting. As housing trends change and alternative housing models arise this will help inform decisions and ensure our local regulatory framework is fit for purpose.

🧑‍💻 Requested the CEO draft an Industrial Water Use Policy to prohibit the use of drinking water to be used in the operation of data centres connected to the water supply network. CEO to come back to Council on or before Feb 2027 with Policy and to write to Qld and Commonwealth Governments regarding our regions desire that recycled water be included for new data centres in emerging legislation. There’s been quite a bit of media interest around this with Toowoomba Region taking the lead.

🏠 New Infrastructure Charges were adopted

⚠️ Audit Committee Report (3 June) received and recommendations to be adopted

🏡 Development approval RAL/2025/5915 reconfiguring 2 lots into 50 at Mt Lofty was declined on the grounds it conflicts with 8.2.2 Bushfire Hazard Overlay Code.

I ran a half marathon in 2006 and today I ran another, maybe it’s a mid life crisis! 🏃‍♀️ A big thanks to my running mates for being there through the darkness of cold Winter mornings and long weekend runs. Not as fast as my speedy friends, I could have stopped a number of times, but I didn’t and I finished!! 🥳 Thanks for the encouragement and tips over the past few months (and that last km today Yolande!), I love our Village! Yesterday I participated in Dr Shandiz’s MND clinical trials at the Base Hospital. A number of friends have lost loved ones to the insidious disease so I do what I can, when I can. Thanks Dr Shandiz, nurse Sajina, and med students Aaron and Isaac. I’ll see you again in three months for the follow up.

If anyone’s at all interested in participating please DM me and I’ll put you in touch with the team. What’s special is they use the TMS machine recently purchased as a result of local fundraising efforts, efforts that see results here on the ground thanks Matt Butler and friends. 👏
