4 May 2026 Labour Day.

While Labour Day is listed as a Public Holiday, to the Volunteers at RFS it means being available. In this case the opportunity to help a local property owner in reducing hazards on their land in Toogoom. Our crew assisted with a PERMITTED Hazard Reduction Stack Burn, near the plant nursery on Toogoom Rd.

Today’s weather conditions look promising for us to help a local property owner in reducing hazards on their land in Toogoom. Our crew will be assisting with a PERMITTED Hazard Reduction Stack Burn, near the plant nursery on Toogoom Rd. While we will attempt to minimise the impact of smoke, once we have started we’re at the mercy of the wind.

So, if you do smell smoke don’t be alarmed. However, if you do see a suspicious fire, don’t hesitate to call 000 and report it. The emergency operator will know if there is an active permit in place.

24 April 2026:
FireCom notified by QPWS of hotspots that were satellite detected, Toogoom RFB was dispatched to investigate, active fire was observed further into the Vernon Forest threatening neighbouring farmland.
Toogoom was joined by brigades from Howard Torbanlea, Nickenbah and Burrum Heads, as well as crews from QPWS. Together it was back burned from farmland into the active fire, “Ringing” the fire with burned ground and leaving the area safe. Dundowran RFB was tasked with patrolling to ensure containment.

C’mon baby light my fire (Apologies to The Doors)

Come on baby, light my fire
Try to set the night on fire

Training tonight was intended to be extinguishing fires however dampness disagreed and it was a case of using drip torches, rolling hoses, a bit of spraying, and that was that!

Toogoom RFS Life Membership. Congratulations to Barry Hamilton.

Presentation words by Tim McMahon 1st Officer.
“Barry Hamilton has been a stalwart member of this brigade for a considerable time. He more than qualifies for the time he has served the community for this award, and he more than qualifies for the dedication he has shown to the Queensland Fire Service as a Firefighter, Brigade Officer, Brigade First Officer and Fire Warden. Barry has served on numerous deployments, within Queensland, as well as interstate – as well as uncountable fires within the Fraser Coast area. Barry’s training statement testifies to his ongoing commitment to improving and maintaining his skills and knowledge. And all of this with the support of Lyn. Despite his reluctance to make a song and dance regarding his service, this Brigade feels it is only proper to recognise his service with a Life Membership.”

What did you do this Sunday?

For our volunteers there was Group Training this morning at the sports field Torquay. Several rural brigades got a tour of three urban trucks and all the gear they have on board. One heavy rescue, focused on people trapped in burning buildings and car wrecks. Another almost as big with some rescue equipment but more focus on water and hoses to fight fires. The third was a water tanker; 9,000 litres of water compared with 1,600 on our trucks. Good overview of what the urban brigades do and how we rural brigades can work alongside them. They are trained and equipped for fires in buildings, industrial facilities, car crashes. We go after vegetation fires out in the open. Not a lot of overlap but when there is it's good for both to know how each other work.
If you’re interested in joining as a volunteer give our 1st Officer a call on 0407 644 735 for more details.

No Fires on the foreshore

Monday evening we received a fire call that came via Queensland Police Service to FireCom and then to both Toogoom RFB and Craignish Auxiliaries, both brigades attended the new Toogoom boat ramp, then as a result and acting on witness reports to Fixter Park to “have a chat” with 3 young boys out having “fun”.
This is where it gets more serious as we’re sure you don’t want your kids to cost you in fines for their behaviour. Please ensure your children are aware.
- Here’s what you may not know, the cost to involve the Auxiliary fire service is approximately $1500-$2000 for the call out.
- There is no place on the Toogoom foreshore where it is legal to light any fire.
This time it was a warning only.

NO FIRES ON THE TOOGOOM FORESHORE!

What a big day, our volunteers were on the go early to setup at the TADCA Easter Fair, our members created a children’s activity course which once operating was overrun with children enjoying the fun. Well done to all our members who participated in maintaining the momentum.
