Wood fire safety - is your chimney or flue clean? 🔥
Most of us are probably using wood-fueled heaters of one type or another to heat our homes in Winter. Over time, soot and creosote can build up on the inside walls. This is exacerbated by burning softwood or green firewood.
This build-up in the chimney is highly flammable. If it catches it will burn extremely hot and can compromise the integrity of the flue or chimney, and can start a fire in your ceiling. Symptoms will include a loud roaring noise, flue glowing red hot, and flames erupting from the top like a jet.
If this happens to you
* Shut down all vents and dampers on the heater to starve it of oxygen. This may not extinguish it, but it will help slow it down until help arrives
* Call 000 immediately.
* If safe to do so, move anything flammable or valuable away from the fireplace as the process of extinguishing the fire is likely to be rather messy
* Everyone should evacuate the building and remain at a safe distance.
* Do not open the firebox door, and do not throw water into the firebox!

Burning only dry, seasoned hardwood can help prevent flue fires
Do not leave clothes (including wet washing) draped close to the heater – they should be at least 1m away.
And a reminder to store cats at a safe distance from the fireplace 😺

Smoke alarms should be replaced every ten years 📆
Installing a smoke alarm with a 10-year long-life battery means that you won’t need to change the battery for the life of the alarm.

Lithium-ion batteries are found in many rechargable devices, including e-bikes, laptops, mobile phones, children's toys and power tools.
If a Lithium-ion Battery is improperly charged, handled, stored or disposed of there is a risk
of overheating, catching fire or explosion.
To minimise the risk of lithium-ion battery fires ensure you:
• Purchase products from a reputable supplier and follow the manufacturer’s instructions.
• Only use chargers and cords that are originally supplied with that device. Using chargers with incorrect power delivery (voltage and current) can cause damage or overheating that can lead to fires.
• Don’t leave batteries or devices unattended whilst charging and once fully charged, disconnect them from the charger.
• Only use the battery that is designed for that device.
• Charge your device on non-combustible surfaces in a room where a smoke alarm is present. Avoid locations where a fire would block your exit.
• Never charge a device under your pillow, on your bed or on a couch.
• Avoid overheating of batteries including exposure to heat or extreme temperatures for example in locked vehicles. Let batteries cool before recharging.
• Don’t use batteries or devices that show signs of swelling or bulging, leaking, overheating, or signs of mechanical damage (cracked, dented, punctured, or crushed).
• Avoid exposure to moisture, overcharging and storing batteries close to each other.
