Training 23 Jun Part 2 of 2

Tuesday evening, the Brigade conducted training with a ‘Doll’s house’. This is a small timber box that allows firefighters to simulate a fire within a building.

This allows our firefighters to observe how a fire develops and how it reacts to changes in air supply, cooling with water etc.

This is an easy and inexpensive way of providing valuable training on fire behaviour, fire suppression and even identifying burn patterns and markers which can be passed on to fire investigators for further examination.

In the attached footage you can see a back draught phenomenon being demonstrated, followed by a simulated door entry.

Tuesday evening, the Brigade conducted training with a ‘Doll’s house’. This is a small timber box that allows firefighters to simulate a fire within a building.

Keep looking when cooking.

Fires in the kitchen are the leading cause of house fires in NSW. The cause is almost always the same. Unattended cooking.

If you have to leave the kitchen, turn the stove off. A hot pan only needs a minute.

Cold dinner beats a house fire.

Pulled the electric blanket out of the cupboard for the first cold night? Check it before you switch it on.

Look for frays, scorch marks, exposed wires or damage to the controller. If anything looks off, bin it.

Never fold one while it's on. Never sleep on it switched on.

It was a matter of being in the right place at the right time for Thornton Brigade this afternoon.

The crew had been conducting some training with RFS Cadets at St Philip's Christian College Cessnock. They were travelling back to our station when they were tasked to a vehicle fire at Sawyer’s Gully.

They were able to respond quickly and contain the fire to prevent it spreading into nearby bush land.

The crew was assisted by NSW RFS - Neath Brigade and NSW RFS - Central - Cessnock Brigade.

Phones, laptops, e-bike batteries. They all generate heat while charging.

Charging on a bed, doona or pillow traps that heat against fabric. Lithium-ion fires can start fast.

Charge on a hard, flat surface. Keep batteries off bedding.

Today is National Thank a First Responder Day, an initiative of Fortem Australia, to encourage the community to thank first responders for the work they do in our community.

Thornton brigade thanks our volunteers for everything they do to support our community, whether it be responding to emergencies, conducting community education or simply supporting community events.

We also thank all the first responders that we work side by side with:

This evening the brigade conducted training around the local area. Crews in our Category 1 tanker and Pumper appliance separately attended simulated incidents of a bush fire and car fire where they were required to rapidly assess the situation and formulate an appropriate plan to contain the incident before putting a plan into action.

As members were in the process of completing their tasks, they were re-tasked to a simulated structure fire at the Lower Hunter Fire Control Centre. Upon arrival of the first truck, they set to work, deploying hose lines to begin attacking the ‘fire’. With the second truck arriving shortly after, the crew was able to find a water source (hydrant) to relay water to the first truck and gain access to the structure to rescue a casualty.

Training nights like this are multi faceted. Not only do our members get to refine their firefighting skills, but it provides an opportunity for truck and equipment familiarisation, familiarisation of the local area and a chance to work with members they may not have worked with before. Tonight’s crews included newly qualified members who are yet to respond to their first incident up to members with many years of experience.
