❤️ A Warm Welcome for Our Winter Shelter Guests ❤️

One of the things we wanted most for our guests arriving at the WARM Winter Shelter was for them to feel welcomed, valued, and cared for from the moment they walked through the door.

Thanks to the incredible generosity of our supporters, community members, and partner organisations, each guest received a welcome pack filled with practical items to help them stay warm, comfortable, and supported throughout their stay.

Each guest receives

🛏️ A brand new sleeping bag, kindly donated through the support of Preston Bunnings and Rotary.

🛌 A brand new pillow, generously donated by Laura from Kindly.

👕 New clothing, including essential items such as underwear and socks
🧴 A hygiene pack containing toiletries and personal care items.
Kindly donated by generous community and church members, Waan and her Thai friends and Hands heart.

🎒 Additional practical items to help make their stay more comfortable.

For many people experiencing homelessness, receiving brand new items is something that happens far less often than most of us realise. There is something incredibly special about being able to offer not just warmth and comfort, but dignity. Knowing that these items belong to them and have never been used by anyone else can mean so much.

The smiles, gratitude, and relief on our guests’ faces as they receive their packs reminds us that sometimes it is the simple things that make the biggest difference.

To everyone who donated items, funds, time, and support to help make these welcome packs possible — thank you. Your kindness helps ensure that every guest arrives to a warm welcome and knew that their community cares.

❤️ Together, we are creating more than a shelter. We are creating a place where people feel safe, respected, and valued.

❄️ WARM Winter Shelter – Night Two ❄️

Tonight we moved to our second venue for the WARM Winter Shelter, hosted by the wonderful Thornbury Church of Christ.

A very special thank you to Sue Maric and the church community for so generously opening your doors and allowing us to use your amazing church. Your hospitality, kindness, and willingness to be part of this program are helping provide warmth, safety, and dignity to people experiencing homelessness this winter.

One of the unique things about the WARM program is seeing different church communities come together to support some of our most vulnerable community members. Every venue, every volunteer, every meal, and every act of kindness helps make this possible.

Tonight’s menu was Sweet and Sour chicken with Rice or Mashed potatoes, creamy chicken pasta followed by cake and coffee. Our heartfelt thanks to Heta from ADRA for the amazing donations of food for our winter shelter ❤️

To Sue, the volunteers, and everyone at Thornbury Church of Christ, thank you for being part of something so important. Your generosity is making a real difference in the lives of people who are doing it tough.

Together, we are creating more than just a shelter. We are creating a community of care, compassion, and hope.

❄️ WARM Winter Shelter – Opening Night ❄️

On Wednesday night, after months of planning, preparation, meetings, training sessions, fundraising, donations, and the incredible efforts of so many people, the day we had all been working towards finally arrived.

The doors of the WARM Winter Shelter opened for our first night at St Peter’s Anglican Church Bundoora, welcoming our first guests into a warm, safe space out of the cold.

There was a real sense of excitement, relief, and gratitude as volunteers came together and everything that had been planned for so long became a reality. Seeing the shelter come to life was a special moment for everyone involved.

Our guests were treated to an absolutely incredible home-cooked meal prepared by the amazing Noni. Dinner was a feast of roast lamb, roast pumpkin, roast potatoes, peas, carrots, rich gravy, mint sauce, cauliflower cheese, and cauliflower with cheese sauce.

And as if that wasn’t enough, dessert was a delicious homemade apple crumble that had everyone going back for seconds!

Each guest was also welcomed with practical items to help make their stay more comfortable. They received a brand-new sleeping bag, generously donated through the support of Preston Bunnings and Rotary, a brand-new pillow kindly donated by Laura from Kindly, and a clothing and hygiene pack containing toiletries, underwear, socks, and other essentials generously donated by Hands Hearts Hope and members of our community.

These may seem like simple items, but for someone doing it tough, they provide comfort, dignity, warmth, and the knowledge that people genuinely care.

A warm bed, a hot meal, friendly faces, and a place where people are welcomed with kindness and dignity – that’s what WARM is all about.

To every volunteer, donor, supporter, church member, and community partner who helped make this first night possible, thank you. This shelter exists because of people who care enough to step forward and make a difference.

Here’s to the beginning of a very special winter season, where together we can offer warmth, hope, friendship, and a safe place to belong.

We are incredibly proud and grateful to have HHH standing alongside WARM this year, providing training and volunteers to help us support some of our community’s most vulnerable people during the colder months.

It’s been wonderful to see so many caring people stepping forward wanting to be part of something meaningful and community-driven. The compassion, kindness, and commitment shown by everyone attending the training sessions has been truly heartwarming.

Saturday saw the first volunteer training session for the WARM Winter Shelter held at St Peter’s Church, and what an incredible day it was. ❤️ Thank you to Hands Hearts Hope for partnering with us to provide volunteers and training.

It was amazing to see so many compassionate people coming together with one shared goal — to help create a safe, warm, and welcoming space for those doing it tough this winter.

As we move closer to opening the shelter doors, the excitement is definitely building. After months of planning, meetings, organising donations, recruiting volunteers, and working behind the scenes, it’s starting to feel very real.

Over the coming 12 weeks of winter, this shelter will provide warmth, meals, support, kindness, and dignity to people who need it most — and none of it would be possible without our incredible volunteers and the organisations standing alongside one another to make it happen.

A huge thank you to everyone who attended the training session and to all those working tirelessly behind the scenes to bring this project together. ❤️

A very special thank you as well to Sean and Mandy for generously giving their time to come along and deliver training around safety, communication, and de-escalation techniques. Your knowledge, support, and willingness to share your experience was truly appreciated by everyone in the room.

And an extra big thank you to Noni and Lena for the absolutely amazing food that kept everyone going throughout the day. It was so appreciated and added such a warm and welcoming touch to the training session. ❤️

We are still looking for compassionate volunteers to join the team for the upcoming winter shelter program.

If you are someone who would like to give back to the community, whether it’s helping with meals, guest support, driving, overnight support, setup, pack down, or simply offering kindness and conversation — we would love to hear from you.
