Council recently met with the NSW Government’s Drought Coordinator, Mr Ray Willis, to discuss current drought conditions in Tenterfield.

The visit included discussions with farming producers in Mingoola on the range of drought support measures currently available, though the clear message was that more needed to be done to support farmers across the region.

RECYCLING REMINDER ♻️

Our waste collection team has noticed a few recent instances of contaminated recycling bins (yellow lid bins).

Please remember:
Items such as plastic bags, nappies, food waste, clothing, cords, small loose items and construction waste should NOT go in your yellow recycling bin.

Contaminated recycling doesn’t just impact the environment, it can also cost Council and the community significant $$$ when entire recycling loads are rejected due to contamination and sent to landfill instead.

Before placing items in your recycling bin:
✅ Keep recyclables loose
✅ Flatten cardboard boxes
✅ Empty and rinse recyclable containers✅ Keep plastic bags and soft plastics out

For more information about what can and can’t be recycled, visit Council’s recycling page: www.tenterfield.nsw.gov.au/services/waste-recycling/recycling-2

☕ Fact: Takeaway coffee cups cannot be recycled in your yellow bin. While they may look like cardboard, most coffee cups contain a plastic lining which prevents them from being processed through standard recycling systems.

💧 REMINDER | Have Your Say on Proposed Water Restriction Trigger Changes

📅 Submissions close this Friday, 29 May 2026.

While some recent rainfall has been a very welcome sight for Tenterfield town, maintaining our town dam at 75% capacity, we know this rain hasn’t fallen evenly. We acknowledge that severe drought conditions continue to heavily impact our surrounding rural communities and villages.

It is with our water security in mind that Council is proposing proactive updates to our water restriction "trigger levels", to act sooner to protect the water supply of town before it gets critically low.

Planning during this steadier period allows us to act sooner to protect our town supply before it gets critically low, ensuring we are prepared when dry spells occur.

What does this proposed change mean?
* Restrictions would begin at 80% dam capacity (instead of waiting until 70%).
* Each level steps up slightly earlier to stretch out our water supply for longer.
* Stronger restrictions would kick in at 40% capacity instead of 15% to avoid emergency shortages.

We want to make sure these rules are practical, fair, and balanced for every household and local business.
