Richmond Birdwing Butterfly news...Tamborine Mountain Landcare (TML) has a joint project with Tamborine Mountain Regional Botanic Gardens. We are delighted to add to the existing Birdwing vines already planted at the gardens. The new project is an educational one. The volunteers at the Gardens have constructed a substantial trellis for the vines to climb on to. We (TML), supplied and planted the vines. Perfect location for visitors to learn about this lovely butterfly. We will also install appropriate signage. Bonus - large vine already growing vigorously, right next to the trellis...planted a few years ago, and now climbing right up into the canopy of a Flindersia australis. Recently we collected some seed pods from this vine and sent them off to Richard Bull (Richmond Birdwing Conservation Network, for propagation). Community groups working together - a very good outcome.

OHIA Court Reserve - corner of Long Rd and Ohia Court. Vandals have ripped of our sign at the entrance. This once w**dy council reserve has been regenerated by TM Landcare. Volunteers, with the assistance of Scenic rim Regional Council and contractors have managed to turn this space into a mini rainforest over the past 20 years. A wildlife haven connecting up with the National Park on Macdonnell Road. Very disheartening for us, who spend our time trying to take care of the environment. Maybe just kids 'having fun' but sad to see this happening in our local area. Thanks to all the people in our community who support our efforts.

Trainees are back to help TM Landcare with our w**d eradication program. The Qld Govt's Skilling Queenslanders for Work initiative is up and running again. Yesterday we had a difficult site for them to start their work up here. The lovely little creek that flows from Ohia Court Reserve, under Long Rd and down the back of properties in Forsythia Drive and through to the Botanic Gardens, was heavily impacted by the 2023 Christmas Night tornado. Locals will remember the devastation to houses and our environment. Some properties are still having repairs done. One property on Forsythia was completely destroyed by a massive fig tree in the creek area, which was uprooted, taking out large eucalyptus trees which fell on the house. The resulting loss of canopy has meant that a huge number of w**ds have emerged in the creek area. We at Landcare have taken on the task of removing the w**d species in the council creek corridor, using our contractors and the trainees - mainly Giant Devil's Figs and Wild To***co - carefully looking out for some native species which are already returning. Only minimal planting on the upper areas while regenerating in taking place. The trainees have already made good progress and another couple of days should make a huge difference. The most important part of these works will be maintenance...until the newly emerging native species can dominate the area again.

Yellow flowers all over Tamborine Mountain...unfortunately this pretty plant is a w**d. I was reminded today by a concerned resident that they are becoming very prolific in private properties and along roadsides...we don't usually notice them until they are flowering around Easter time hence the name 'Easter Cassia' (Senna pendula var.glabrata). Five large petals with prominent yellow margins. Seed pods are cylindical pods and hang downwards. Information about this shrub can be found on the Brisbane city Council W**d Website, including the control methods. This website is a really good resource for finding out about our local w**ds. The Easter Cassia is regarded as an environmental w**d in NSW and Qld. We at Tamborine Mountain Landcare are doing our best to eradicate these and other significant w**ds in the local Council reserves, but we don't have the resources to tackle every w**d on the mountain...it would be great if at least the private property owners could take them out...thank you.

First Tuesday of each month - our team of volunteers are w**ding and planting in Council reserves and parks. This morning we were w**ding in Holt Park - a lovely little park on corner of Hartley and Holt roads, just down from the High School. Lots of large-leaved and small-leaved Privet, Wild To***co, white passionfruit etc.. Not all hard work though - time for a coffee, cake - and sandwiches today. Beautiful morning for w**ding! The Tuesday team were hard at it again, taking care of the local forests. Today's working bee was held opposite the Scouts den in Hartley road - close to the Sports Grounds and Parkrun track. Following on from the Saturday Group's w**ding efforts, carefully looking out for little emerging native seedlings. We took care of the very invasive Annual Ragw**d, Velcro W**d, White Passionfruit, Cobbler's Pegs, Small and Large leaved Privet, Giant Devil's figs plus many more...Very satisfying to stand back and see the result after just a couple of hours of hand w**ding...then off to the Landcare Centre for morning tea at our picnic tables. Great morning, and great people!

Yummy Lilly Pillies! Caring for our native wildlife...a great outcome for our National Tree Day planting, held a couple of years ago at the back of the Landcare Centre - bordering the Scouts field, Hartley Road. Our wonderful Wildcarer, Heidi, did the inaugural wildlife fodder cut for a Mum and Joey Brushtail Possum, currently in Heidi's care. The community tree planting day focused on planting fodder plants for native animals in care. To be able to cut fresh leaves from an accessible little fodder plantation was the plan. The trees still have some growing to do but to see this morning's little harvest being fed to the possums was very heartwarming. Thanks Wildcare, and to Heidi in particular, for the dedication and commitment to the welfare of our local wildlife.

Ahhh the serenity - early this morning at the Landcare Centre pond. This space, along with the rest of the centre with its open grassy areas and planted native gardens, has been taken care of for past 11 years by volunteers, and occasionally our contractors, when funds allow. The seat at the pond was kindly donated by the Tamborine Mountain Garden Club, who also funded the repairs to tracks etc after Cyclone Alred brought down trees. Community groups working together - this Mountain is magic...
