Could you and your household manage for the first 72 hours after an emergency?

Council is hosting a free First 72 Hours community preparedness program to help residents understand what to do before, during and after an emergency.

First 72 Hours is an initiative designed to educate communities about emergency preparedness.

Learn how to prepare an emergency plan, understand your role during an emergency, and build the skills and confidence to look after yourself and your household in an emergency such as a bushfire or flood.

Sessions start in Walwa on Wednesday 16 September before visiting Granya, Bethanga, Tallandoon, Lucyvale, Towong, Tallangatta Valley, Tallangatta, Corryong and Biggara.

Visit Council's towong.vic.gov.au/72hours for full session dates and locations.

๐Ÿฆ Magpie swooping season is here

As spring approaches, some native birds become protective of their nests and young. Swooping is a natural and temporary behaviour that helps keep eggs and chicks safe.

If you're out walking, riding or enjoying local parks, remember to:

โœ… Avoid known swooping hotspots
โœ… Move calmly and quickly through the area
โœ… Wear protective head and eye coverings if needed
โœ… Never harass birds or disturb nests

Help others stay informed by reporting swooping bird incidents on Victoria's interactive map: https://www.wildlife.vic.gov.au/managing-wildlife/swooping-birds

All native wildlife is protected under Victorian law.

In the coming weeks Council will commence a trial of new traffic calming measures in Bellbridge and Tallangatta. The trial is in response to community feedback, concerns and reports to Councillors about vehicle speeds.

The trial will include wide, low-profile rubberised speed humps and warning signs at Bellbridge (Lake Road and near the Boat Club entrance) and Tallangatta (three locations along Queen Elizabeth Drive).

The trial will allow Council to assess traffic conditions, including busy periods. Speed monitoring and traffic counters will be used to help assess the effectiveness of the measures with variable message signs (VMS) used to notify motorists of the changed traffic conditions.

There may be slight delays during installation. Installation is expected to commence from 7 September in Tallangatta and 14 September in Bellbridge.

If the trial is successful, Council will consider making the traffic calming measures permanent. A further opportunity for community feedback will be provided during the trial.

For more information and to view the relevant plans please visit the project page at towong.vic.gov.au/traffic-calming-trial

Following in-person community consultation sessions in August, Council is continuing to explore how community programs and neighbourhood house activities could be delivered across the Upper Murray.

This includes considering whether services could operate from the proposed integrated services hub at the former Corryong Junior Campus.

We want to hear what mattered to you about the former Corryong Neighbourhood Centre, what the community needs now and what you would like to see in the years ahead.

Eames Architects has been appointed to assist Council with community engagement and visioning for the new Neighbourhood House program.

This survey is part of the ongoing consultation and takes about 10 minutes to complete. You're welcome to complete this survey regardless of whether you attended the in person sessions.

The survey will be open until 15 September 2026. We appreciate your feedback that will help shape the structure and vision of possible Neighbourhood House services.
