一般財団法人自治体国際化協会 シドニー事務所（現地での名称: JAPAN LOCAL GOVERNMENT CENTRE（CLAIR Sydney））は、一般財団法人自治体国際化協会（Council of Local Authorities for International Relations,　略称:CLAIR［クレア］）が設置している 海外事務所の１つです。
シドニー事務所の主な活動内容
１． 地方自治体関係者がオーストラリア・ニュージーランドで行う活動等への支援
２． 日本とオーストラリア・ニュージーランドとの自治体間の交流支援
３． オーストラリア・ニュージーランドの地方制度に関する情報の収集・提供
４． オーストラリア・ニュージーランドの地方自治体との連携強化

CLAIRは、地域の国際化を支援する地方公共団体の共同組織として、昭和63年７月に設立されました。語学指導等を行う外

国青年招致事業（JETプログラム）の運営、地域の国際化の担い手となる人材の育成、地域国際化協会への支援、国際交流・国際協力事業の推進など、地域の要請に応えたさまざまな国際化支援活動を展開しています。
また、シドニーのほか、ニューヨーク、ロンドン、パリ、シンガポール、ソウル、北京に設置する海外事務所のネットワークを通じて、日本の地方公共団体の海外活動の支援や諸外国の地方行政に関する情報収集・提供等も行っています。

The Japan Local Government Centre (CLAIR, Sydney) is one of the seven overseas offices of CLAIR, the Council of Local Authorities for International Relations. Assisting Japanese local governments’ activities in Australia and New Zealand.
2. Researching into Australian and New Zealand’s government policies and practices.
4. Enhancing the partnerships between Japan, Australia and New Zealand. CLAIR is a semi-government organisation which was established in 1988 jointly by Japanese prefectures and municipalities (regional and grassroots level governments respectively) to help facilitate their various international programmes. To promote the internationalization of local communities, we oversee the JET (Japan Exchange and Teaching) Programme, help develop the careers of staff with roles in international departments, support recognized local international exchange associations, and encourage international cooperation. Moreover, CLAIR researches into Australian and New Zealand’s government policies and practices, and provides information through its international network of offices in New York, London, Paris, Singapore, Seoul, Beijing and Sydney.

５月21日（木）、メルボルン及びシドニーで開催されたsnow travel expoへの出展のため来豪された山形市の関係者の皆様が、クレアシドニー事務所を訪問されました。

ブリーフィングとして、当事務所の業務内容のほか、オーストラリアの国勢、経済等に関する基本情報、日本へのインバウンドの状況などをご説明したところ、日豪の産業構造の違いや訪日観光に関する近年の動向などについてご質問をいただくなど、活発に意見交換が行われました。

クレアシドニー事務所では、オーストラリア及びニュージーランドにおける日本の自治体の様々な活動を支援しています。活動支援のご希望がございましたら、どうぞお気軽にお問い合わせください。

On Thursday, 21 May, representatives from Yamagata City, who came to Australia to exhibit at the Snow Travel Expo held in Melbourne and Sydney, paid a visit to CLAIR Sydney Office.

During their visit, we outlined the role of our office and provided an overview of Australia’s society and economy, as well as the current state of inbound tourism to Japan. This led to an engaging discussion on the differences in industry structure between Japan and Australia and recent trends in inbound tourism.

CLAIR Sydney also supports a wide range of initiatives undertaken by Japanese local governments in Australia and New Zealand. If you require assistance with your activities, please feel free to contact us.

5月24日、メルボルン市の東方約15㎞に位置するホワイトホース市で「Japan Festival 2026」が開催されました。
会場には、約100のブースや屋台が並び、日本の雑貨や工芸品、寿司やお好み焼きなどの日本食が販売されていたほか、折り紙や将棋などの体験コーナーも設けられていました。ステージでは、和太鼓やソーラン節、津軽三味線などの多彩なパフォーマンスのほか、着物やコスプレのコンテストなどが行われ、約5,500人の来場者で賑わっていました（主催者発表）。

クレアシドニー事務所はブースを出展し、観光パンフレットなどを通じて日本各地の魅力をPRしました。来場者の中には、日本でのクルーズ旅行を予定している方や、「これまでに10回以上日本を訪れた」という方もおり、訪日旅行に対する旺盛な需要を感じました。また、日本への旅行をきっかけに、日本への移住を目指して日本語の学習を始めた方もいらっしゃるなど、日本での生活や文化に対する関心の高さもうかがえました。

ホワイトホース市は、千葉県松戸市と今年、姉妹都市提携55周年という節目の年を迎えました。ホワイトホース市が所在するビクトリア州における日豪の姉妹都市関係の中で、最も長い歴史を誇ります。会場には、交流事業の一環として、松戸市民の方々が描いた絵手紙も展示されており、両市の深い絆を感じる機会となっていました。

On 24 May, the Japan Festival 2026 was held in the City of Whitehorse, located approximately 15 km east of Melbourne.
Around 100 booths and stalls lined the venue, offering Japanese goods and crafts as well as Japanese cuisine such as sushi and okonomiyaki. Visitors could also enjoy cultural activities including origami and shogi (Japanese chess). There were also a variety of stage performances, including taiko drumming, the Soran Bushi folk dance, and Tsugaru shamisen music, as well as kimono and cosplay contests. According to the organisers, the festival attracted approximately 5,500 visitors.

CLAIR Sydney also hosted a booth, promoting the attractions of regions across Japan through tourism brochures and other materials. Among the visitors to our booth were people planning cruise trips to Japan, as well as others who said they had visited the country more than ten times, reflecting the enduring appeal of Japan as a travel destination. We also spoke to visitors who had started learning Japanese after their travels and were hoping to move there in the future, highlighting a strong interest in Japanese culture and way of life.

This year marks the 55th anniversary of the sister-city relationship between the City of Whitehorse and Matsudo City in Chiba Prefecture. It is the longest-running Japan–Australia sister-city relationship in the state of Victoria. As part of the exchange program, the venue also displayed letters with hand-drawn illustrations created by residents of Matsudo , offering visitors a glimpse into the strong bond between the two cities.

5月12日（火）、シドニーを拠点とするNSW州豪日協会（AJS-NSW）の主催により、日本関連学習優秀者表彰式が開催され、シドニー都市圏の7つの大学から推薦された7名の学生に表彰状が授与されました。
　表彰後には、各受賞者が、日本語も交えながらスピーチを行い、日本語を学び始めたきっかけや日本語の魅力、学習する上での苦労、将来の目標などが語られました。「日本のゲーム会社で働くことを夢見て、日本語を学び始め、学習を続けている」、「日本の大学での交換留学を通じて、世界の様々な国や地域の友人に恵まれた」など、その内容は多岐にわたりました。いずれの学生も、「日本語学習により、その後の人生の選択肢や可能性が広がった」、「日本に関わる仕事に就くことや日本で生活することに向け、今後もさらなる挑戦を続けていく」と述べていました。
　母語以外の言語を学び、習得することは、簡単なことではないと思いますが、日本語学習に前向きに取り組み、卒業後も日本との関わりを大切にしていきたいと語る学生の皆さんのスピーチに心を打たれました。
　クレアシドニー事務所では、こうした日本語や日本文化を通じた人的交流や日豪関係のさらなる発展に向け、日本語教育機関をはじめとする関係機関との連携強化に引き続き取り組んでまいります。

On Tuesday, 12 May, the Australia-Japan Society of NSW (AJS-NSW) held an awards ceremony to recognise outstanding achievement in Japanese-related studies. Certificates were presented to seven students, each nominated by a university across the Sydney metropolitan area.
Following the presentation ceremony, each award recipient delivered a speech, some in Japanese, reflecting on what inspired them to begin studying the language, its appeal, , the challenges they encountered during their studies, and their future aspirations. Their stories varied widely, ranging from students who began learning the language with the dream of working for a Japanese game company to those whose exchange experiences at Japanese universities enabled them to build friendships with people from around the world.
Many of the students reflected on how learning Japanese had expanded their horizons and future possibilities and expressed their hope to continue taking on new challenges connected to Japan, including working or living there in the future.
Learning and mastering a language other than one’s mother tongue is never easy. We were deeply moved by the speeches of these students, who spoke passionately about maintaining their connection with Japan even after graduation.
CLAIR Sydney will continue to work closely with Japanese language education institutions and related organisations, further strengthening people-to-people exchanges through Japanese language and culture, and contributing to the ongoing development of Japan-Australia relations.

熱気あふれるブリスベンでしまなみ海道の魅力を発信！

クイーンズランド州ブリスベンでは、3月16日から4月12日までの約1か月間、「ブリスベンサイクリングフェスティバル」が開催され、市内各所で多様な自転車関連イベントが行われました。

日本からは愛媛県が2日間にわたりブースを出展し、同県を代表するサイクリングルート「しまなみ海道」や、国際サイクリングイベント「サイクリングしまなみ」をPRしました。クレアシドニーは、ブース運営をサポートし、来場者に愛媛県の魅力をお届けしました。

来場者の中には、日本旅行の経験のある方が多く見られた一方で、日本滞在中にサイクリングを体験した方はごく少数にとどまりました。その一方で、「明日から日本を訪れ、『しまなみ海道』でサイクリングをする予定」という方もいらっしゃったほか、「友人から『しまなみ海道』でサイクリングをした話を聞き、自分も訪れてみたいと思っている」といった声も聞かれました。さらに、「しまなみ海道」でのサイクリングを組み込んだツアーの有無や、自転車レンタルに関する具体的な質問も多く寄せられました。こうした反応から、訪日観光における新たな体験コンテンツとしてのサイクリングの可能性を強く感じました。

クレアシドニーは今後も、日本の自治体によるオーストラリアおよびニュージーランドでの取り組みを積極的に支援してまいります。

The Brisbane Cycling Festival was held in Brisbane, Queensland, from 16 March to 12 April, bringing nearly a month of diverse cycling-related events to locations across the city.

Ehime Prefecture hosted a booth over two days, promoting its iconic cycling route, the Shimanami Kaido, along with its international cycling event, Cycling Shimanami. CLAIR Sydney supported the operation of a booth, helping to share the appeal of Ehime with festival visitors.

While many visitors had previously travelled to Japan, only a small number had experienced cycling during their stay. At the same time, we met visitors who shared that they were, “ travelling to Japan tomorrow and planning to cycle along the Shimanami Kaido,” as well as others who commented, “I’ve heard from a friend who cycled there, and I’d love to visit someday.” We also received a large number of specific enquiries, including questions about tours that include cycling along the Shimanami Kaido and the availability of bicycle rentals. These responses strongly highlighted the potential of cycling as a new travel experience for visitors to Japan.

We look forward to continuing to introduce travellers to the unique charm of Japan’s regional destinations at future events.
