Yak’s can be found across the Himalayan region and are farmed for their meat, wool and milk, and are also used for transportation. Their thick wool makes them perfectly adapted for the high-altitude climate of the Himalayas.

“They play a vital role in the high mountain communities – not just as a source of sustenance, but as a keystone of cultural identity and socio-economic resilience.” – International Centre for Integrated Mountain Development

Discover these works and many more at our current Main Gallery exhibition 'Woven from a hundred flowers'
सयौं थुँगा फूलका हामी एउटै माला नेपाली which celebrates the rich culture and diverse stories of the Nepalese community of the Georges River region. On display until 30 August 2026.

"We found the whole experience seamless and incredibly collaborative. It was probably one of the few experiences we had where installation of the exhibition was very easy, all the information was given to us and the team was incredibly helpful. I think one of the best things from the whole experience was being able to connect with people in the community!" - Yolanda and Mercedes Vukovich

This modestly sized estate agent’s office is recorded as being located on Belmore Road, Herne Bay (later Riverwood). With plain text on its exterior, it advertised ‘Herne Bay Agency’, while signage near the door reads ‘Estate Agency – houses and land for sale.’ There are a few advertisements in local newspaper 'The Propeller', as well as 'The Daily Telegraph' and 'The Sunday Telegraph', noting properties, house and land for sale, providing particulars or terms at the ‘Herne Bay Agency at Herne Bay Station.’

Due to its unsavoury reputation, Herne Bay was renamed Riverwood in July 1957 in an attempt to change perceptions of the area as a place marked by poverty and crime.

Don't miss our current Snapshot Gallery exhibition 'Sign of the Times' exploring the changing face of St George through the signage and advertisements found on billboards, shopfronts, streets, and everywhere in between. On display until 9 August 2026.

Hear from past Dragon's Lair Gallery artist Bryan Mew's experience below👇

"My experience exhibiting at the Dragon’s Lair Gallery within Hurstville Museum & Gallery has been incredibly rewarding. I was honoured to be part of the gallery’s reopening of its permanent exhibition in the new year, sharing my passion for the ancient Chinese language and its deep connections to local history. It was especially meaningful to receive feedback on how naturally my work resonated within a museum setting that preserves and celebrates the area’s heritage. The staff were consistently professional, supportive, and thoughtful in assisting with the curation and installation of the exhibition, making the entire process a pleasure from start to finish." - Bryan Mew

This National Reconciliation Week, we reflect on the importance of learning from and celebrating the cultures, histories and stories of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

Earlier in May, Hurstville Museum & Gallery which was honoured to host a special Mother’s Day Indigenous painting workshop led by Kamilaroi artist Amy Lea Hill-Trindall. Participants were introduced to Aboriginal symbols and traditional painting techniques, creating their own meaningful artworks that told personal stories through art.

Amy Lea Hill-Trindall is a contemporary Indigenous artist from the Kamilaroi nation and a Sutherland Shire local. She is a recognised local Aboriginal Artist within the Sutherland Shire and a previous board member of the Kurranulla Aboriginal Corporation. She has lived all her life along the Georges and Woronora rivers on Dharawal Country and has been an active member of the Aboriginal community. She is proud of her heritage and loves sharing the beauty of her culture. Her distinctive style combines modern colours with traditional methods, to create unique artwork, reflecting the marine wildlife and fauna around Dharawal Country.

Thank you to Amy for sharing her knowledge, creativity and culture with our community as we continue to learn, listen and walk together toward reconciliation.

Cornelius Diment (1862-1950) was born in Cossington, Somerset England. In 1907, in partnership with Mr Walter Settle, he acquired a grocery business from Mr Fred Taylor on Forest Road near Carrington Avenue, which became known as Settle and Diment. When Settle retired, Diment continued working and purchased the produce business of Mr Sam McFarlane, located opposite Hurstville railway station on Forest Road. This site was later demolished and a new building, designed by Hurstville architect Charles H Halstead, was erected in its place. The produce and hardware store opened in March 1918 and was highly successful. It closed in 1961 to make way for a Coles store.

The Propeller newspaper described the opening of the store and its exterior in an article dated 15 March 1918:
“Externally the buildings are treated in an up-to-date manner. The cement, cornices, mouldings are relieved with blue brick piers, and special attention has been bestowed on advertising by means of cement lettering on the front."

Thank you to everyone who joined us last Sunday for the grand unveiling of our latest exhibition at the Dragon's Lair Gallery, 'Jewels of Tucoerah,' featuring the incredible talent of local artist Richie Vez!

Richie Vez is a musician and visual artist based in Lugarno. His new exhibition utilises driftwood collected along the shores of the Georges River to create sculptural forms presented alongside his unique resin paintings. These works respond to the creative force of nature and are a collaboration with the river.

This exhibition is on display until Sunday 28 June 2026. For enquiries about purchasing any artworks, please feel free to contact our team.

Throughout National Reconciliation Week, Hurstville Museum & Gallery invites our community to reflect, learn and engage in meaningful conversations about reconciliation. This year's theme 'All In' reminds us that reconciliation and advancing Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples’ rights will not happen by itself, and it will not happen without all of us.

Until the 3rd of June, visitors can take part in our colouring-in station and explore informational resources in our Snapshot Gallery, offering an opportunity for all ages to learn more about the significance of this important week.
