Strong, respectful relationships are central to supporting Aboriginal families.
The Strengthening Foundations Learning Pathway developed in partnership with the Health Families and Communities Branch, Ministry of Health supports health professionals working in Aboriginal Maternal and Infant Health Services (AMIHS) and Building Strong Foundations (BSF) teams to build cultural responsiveness, strengthen partnerships and work in ways that honour culture, community and family strengths from pregnancy through to early childhood.

HETI has refreshed the People Managers Program (formerly People Management Skills Program) to better support clinicians and professionals in management roles.

Designed specifically for new managers, the program builds confidence in leading people, cultivating psychologically and culturally safe teams, and creating work environments where people can thrive. The updated content reflects contemporary leadership practice while retaining the virtual workshop structure participants value.

Returning to study after 30 years is a big decision. Doing it while working, supporting a family, and helping set up a new mental health service? Even bigger.

That was the reality for Pramila when she enrolled in the Masters of Applied Mental Health Studies with HETI Higher Education.

With the right structure and support around her, she made it work and she used what she learnt straight away in practice.

During her studies, Pramila:
• Helped shape a new Aboriginal mental health service
• Built confidence in delivering culturally safe care
• Turned her research into a quality improvement initiative
• Stepped into a leadership role as Aftercare Lead

Her experience is a reminder that postgraduate study doesn’t have to be separate from your work, it can strengthen it.

And if you’re unsure whether it’s possible?
“Take the first step, you don’t have to have it all figured out.”

If you’ve been thinking about building your mental health capability but aren’t sure how to fit study into your life, her story shows what’s possible with the right support.

Retention isn’t just about incentives or initiatives on paper, it’s about whether people experience tangible support in their working lives.

When clinicians feel:
• confident in their role,
• connected to their team, and
• supported by leaders who understand the reality of the work,
they’re more likely to stay engaged and remain in the workforce.

That’s where education makes a measurable difference. Capability building strengthens: confidence (I can do this), competence (I know how), and connection (I’m not doing this alone).

Microcredentials and targeted learning in areas like:
• self-care and sustainable practice
• peer support and team culture
• leadership communication and expectations-setting
help translate high-level wellbeing goals into practical actions for early-career staff building confidence and experienced clinicians stepping into mentoring and leadership responsibilities.

Investing in skills development isn’t an “optional extra.” It’s an investment in workforce sustainability. Read more https://heti.edu.au/news/news/leading-for-wellbeing

What stood out most at this year’s HETI Higher Education graduation wasn’t just the achievement, it was what our graduates are already bringing into the mental health workforce.

They come from across the lifespan of care - perinatal and infant, child and youth, adult and older persons - each with a different pathway in, but a shared purpose: to better support people, families and communities.

Some are building new services.
Some are deepening their expertise in areas where it’s needed most.
All are already applying what they learn in real time.

“I chose to study mental health because I wanted to support families in the perinatal and infant space,” Kelly shared.

“I was given the opportunity of pioneering a new service and decided to build my knowledge and skills through a Masters,” said Pramila.

As Dr Susan Grimes put it, this impact starts well before graduation:
“Our completing students bring improved mental healthcare, not just when they graduate, but throughout their study time.”

What they leave with isn’t just a qualification, it’s contemporary, evidence-based practice and a strong, whole-person, recovery approach that will shape care across NSW.

Congratulations to this year’s graduates. The difference you’re making is already being felt.
