This week we celebrated International Day of Play!

Protect play, protect childhood!

Here are 5 ways to honour nature play across Greater Sydney Parklands:

1. Make time - protect everyday unstructured play. Let kids be kids, every day.
2. Playful places - choose spaces that invite climbing, balancing, hiding, creating, discovering and imagining.
3. Nature first - let green spaces lead the play. Loose parts, natural textures, and sensory-rich moments do the work.
4. Include teens - play doesn’t stop at childhood. Young people (12-18) need time and space to move, create, connect and unwind.
5. Share stewardship - look after the parks that look after us. Volunteer, pick up litter, and learn from the plants and wildlife around you.

What’s your favourite way to play in the parklands? 🌿

Celebrate play with us this week - find a nearby green space, bring someone along, and get outdoors.

Here's what's been happening at Bush School in Western Sydney Parklands, in the words of our facilitator Jess. 🌿

"Once a week we spend two hours in nature letting it be our teacher. On our walks we've spotted kangaroos, millipedes, and fungi and we've even had a goanna stroll through. A few of the kids have earned the title of mud monsters for the enthusiasm they bring to the mud kitchen and we make things with clay and look closely to find the tiny creatures living in the park."

Today is International Day of Plant Health. 🌿

Held each year on 12 May, it highlights the vital role healthy plants play in supporting biodiversity, food security, and the natural environment.

Across Western Sydney Parklands, every tree, plant, garden bed and open green space contributes to a living ecosystem that supports wildlife and helps the park's nature thrive.

Protecting plant health is a shared responsibility. Small actions like staying on paths, respecting planted areas, disposing of rubbish correctly, and making sure nothing is left behind all help reduce harm to our environment and the life they support.

Take care when you’re in the park, and help protect what’s growing around you. 🌱
