🌱 Growing food, friendships and belonging.

Our community gardens are about much more than gardening. They’re places where neighbours meet, friendships grow and people feel more connected to their community.

💚 As one resident says: “Before the garden, we didn’t say hello even though we are neighbours. Now we are all one. We look after each other.”

Through our partnership with Community Greening, an initiative of the Botanic Gardens of Sydney, neighbours can grow their own food, learn new skills and enjoy time together outdoors.

October is Mental Health Month, and this year’s theme Together We Thrive celebrates the power of connection. A simple conversation, a kind message, or taking the time to listen can make a meaningful difference. We couldn’t think of a better example than our recent R U OK DAY? trip to Bowral which gave customers a chance to head out of town and meet others in a welcoming and supportive environment.

Through our broader events program, we're proud to offer free opportunities for residents to connect, learn something new and take a break from the pressures of everyday life.

Whether it's a day trip, an art class or a Friday BBQ, these moments help build stronger neighbourhoods and give people a sense of belonging in the places they call home.

Last week we celebrated the “topping out” of our Social and Affordable Housing development in Carseldine, Brisbane.

When complete, it will provide 152 homes - the largest development of its kind in Queensland. And while it has taken many years to get here, it has taken just 12 months to build to this point.

A highlight of our topping out ceremony was hearing from First Nations artist Lisa Caruana who is creating an art installation for the property.

Lisa’s artwork, Canopy of Belonging, will bring the knowledge and culture of this place into the heart of the community. It will be a beautiful expression of what we hope Carseldine Village will become: a place where people feel safe, connected and a genuine sense of belonging.

What makes this project special isn’t just the scale of the development. It’s the conditions for real community that are coming together, for our new residents.

We’re incredibly grateful to everyone helping bring this vision to life, including DKO and Buildcorp Group, whose innovative use of prefabricated and modular construction is helping us build at remarkable pace.

The St George Community Housing (SGCH) team was out in force this week running a cleaning blitz at some of our older properties.

These can be a challenge to keep clean and safe - it takes persistence and commitment….as well as many hands on the tools!

Participating in these events is part of our staff commitment: every person at SGCH does at least three days per year outside their day job.

“Getting out and meeting residents in our properties makes the work we do, very real” says staff member Shane Sutton.

“It’s great to meet residents, and to collaborate with colleagues we don’t normally get to work with when we’re in the office”.

Today’s event featured lots of smiling faces, meaningful conversations with customers, numerous work orders raised and followed up, and a significant amount of graffiti and dumped waste removed from the site.

🎓 Applications for our 2027 K-12 Strive Scholarship Program are now open!

The Our Strive Scholarship helps families cover the cost of educational essentials, with funding of $500 for primary school students and $1,000 for high school students.

Over the years, Strive has helped thousands of students achieve their goals, whether that's purchasing a laptop, participating in sport, attending excursions, or trying a new after-school activity.

More than financial support, Strive is a vote of confidence in a young person’s future.

Residents of our Riverwood precinct have enjoyed singing together for many years.

To celebrate Community Music Month we’re sharing a glimpse into this special group.
Singers meet every week and enjoy learning and sharing songs from all cultures. They’re not singers but also guitarists, harmonica and ukulele players!

Choirs are just one of the many cultural community activities led by customers and supported by SGCH staff, to keep people connected.

🌷 Taking R U OK? Day on the road 💛 This R U OK? Day, around 100 SGCH customers from Riverwood, Fairfield and Bonnyrigg travelled to Bowral's Tulip Time Festival for a day filled with friendship, connection and community spirit. A highlight was Rosie from Riverwood, who handmade more than 100 R U OK? badges to share with fellow customers.

For many, the day was more than a trip away. It was an opportunity to connect with others, make new friends and enjoy a special experience together. Because sometimes a conversation, a smile, or a day spent in good company can make all the difference. Thank you to everyone from all our communities for joining and making the day so special.

Construction is now underway on 111 permanent Social and Affordable Homes that will create lasting impact, helping people stay connected to the communities, opportunities and support networks that matter most. Because everyone deserves a place to belong.

A special thank you to the partnerships that have made this project possible: Housing Australia, the City of Sydney, Buildcorp Group, DKO Architecture and all those contributing to a future where more people can access a safe, secure and affordable home.

Yesterday, some of our Redfern team spent time together outdoors, connecting and enjoying some fresh air as part of marking R U OK? Day. 🌿💛

We'll be continuing the conversation with more team picnics and excursions in the week ahead, because meaningful connections don't happen on just one day of the year.

Whether it's a colleague, neighbour, friend or family member, a simple "R U OK?" can make a real difference and remind someone they're not alone.

Because every day is a good day to check in, listen and support one another.
