This Halloween, don’t let Dr Google give you a fright! 👻🕸️

It’s easy to get spooked by scary search results, but when it comes to your health, trusted advice is always best. Dr Google might be a Halloween villain, but your GP, pharmacist, healthdirect or healthcare team are the real heroes.🩺

For health advice you can trust, skip the scares and speak to a professional.

Happy Occupational Therapy (OT) Week! Today we celebrate the life-changing work of our OTs, who empower people to achieve independence and wellbeing.

Just seven weeks ago, Joseph came to our OT team with a lack of movement or sensation in his left arm and leg.

Now, thanks to their support, Joseph says: “It has changed my current situation from being able to do nothing at all to bathing myself partially, feeding myself. From non-movement to moving my limbs, it has changed my life as I don’t have to fully depend on my daughters all of the time.”

Thank you, Joseph, for inspiring us and to our OT team for making a difference every day!

It’s Occupational Therapy (OT) Week! We’re celebrating the incredible impact OTs have in supporting participation, independence and wellbeing at every stage of life.

Five weeks ago, Mohd came to the Bankstown-Lidcombe Hospital OT team for help regaining movement in his arms. He couldn’t eat lunch or drink water on his own.

Today, Mohd shares: “I am now back at a level where I can do things independently with not much help from nurses and my family. I wasn’t able to move my arm at all and now there isn’t a lot that I can’t do, which I am very grateful for and have OT to thank for that.”

Thank you, Mohd, for sharing your story and to our OT team for their dedication and support!

Meet Brendan, Senior Social Worker here at Bankstown-Lidcombe Hospital.

For Brendan, social work is about advocating for and empowering vulnerable people, particularly when they face life-changing challenges.

One case that has stayed with him involved a tourist from the United States who suffered a brain injury shortly after arriving in Sydney. With no family support in Australia and significant care needs, returning home seemed uncertain.

Through complex discharge planning, advocacy and teamwork, Brendan helped arrange an escorted medical repatriation flight so the patient could return home to Wisconsin.

“This case will stay with me as an example of the positive outcomes that can be achieved for vulnerable patients with a strong and determined hospital multidisciplinary team that really cares.”

Thank you, Brendan, for your compassion and commitment to making a difference for patients and their families.

It's Allied Health Professions Day, so let us introduce you to Alison Harle, our Director of Allied Health.

Over the past two years, Alison has led work to improve care for people living with severe dementia, bringing together staff, patients, families and multidisciplinary teams to create more dignified, person-centred care.

"Working closely with staff across disciplines and with families reinforced the value of collaboration, co-design and continuous improvement. Seeing the impact of bringing these perspectives together has reminded me of the difference Allied Health can make in driving meaningful change."

Looking ahead, Alison is excited to work with university researchers to strengthen evidence-based dementia care and support a dementia-capable workforce across the District and NSW.

"What keeps me motivated is bringing people together, finding practical solutions and making a lasting difference for patients and families."

Thank you, Alison, for your leadership and dedication to improving care for our community.
