On Tuesday 8 September and Wednesday 9 September, the Select Committee on Emergency Services Funding Reform held two public hearings as part of its inquiry into Emergency Services Funding Reform.

The Committee was established to inquire into and report on options for a replacement levy model for NSW emergency services funding.

During the public hearings at NSW Parliament, the Committee heard that it was important to ensure any replacement levy was equitable and could appropriately resource emergency services into the future. Witnesses also spoke about the need to ensure insurance is affordable.

This week, Speaker of the Legislative Assembly, The Hon Greg Piper MP, welcomed a delegation from the House of Representatives of the National Assembly of Thailand.

The delegation was led by the First Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives Ms. Mallika Jirapunvanit. Other members of the delegation included Miss Orathai Gerdsub and Mr Kongkrit Ramsak, both Members of the House of Representatives, as well as the Consul-General of Thailand in Sydney, Mr Naruchai Ninnad.

The delegation discussed best practices in parliamentary procedures, committee work, and legislative processes.

The Committee on Investment, Industry and Regional Development has wrapped up its site visits in Tweed Heads, public hearing in Tweed Heads and final public hearing at NSW Parliament today.

Over the course of the visit and these hearings, the Committee heard from community organisations, government agencies, local councils and other stakeholders about how the monitoring and accountability of government service delivery in regional NSW can be improved. In Tweed Heads, the Committee also heard about the unique challenges faced by social service providers in a border town.

Across the site visits and two public hearings, the Committee heard from a range of witnesses. See the comments below for a full list of organisations who appeared before the Committee.

The evidence heard during the visit will help inform the Committee’s inquiry into government service delivery standards in regional NSW.

On Monday 10 August and Tuesday 11 August, the Committee on Law and Safety held two public hearings as part of its inquiry into the Forensic Division of the NSW Mental Health Review Tribunal.

Over the two days, the Committee heard from:
• NSW Department of Communities and Justice
• The Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Psychiatrists
• Justice Action
• Mental Health Coordinating Council
• Legal Aid NSW
• New South Wales Bar Association
• NSW Health
• Victim Support Unit : Victims of Crime Assistance League - Hunter NSW
• Homicide Victims' Support Group Australia

The hearings provided an opportunity for the Committee to hear directly from key stakeholders and gather evidence to inform its inquiry.

The Committee is expected to table its report later in 2026.
