Today on Thank a First Responder Day, we acknowledge the people who step forward when it matters most.

Across Australia, first responders play a vital role in supporting their communities, providing care, comfort and reassurance in moments of need.

At St John, our people are proud to stand alongside all first responders, delivering first aid and support and always ready to help.

A small gesture can go a long way, today, we simply say thank you 💚

Congratulations to Albury Combined Division member Margaret Whittaker OStJ OAM, who has been recognised in the 2026 King’s Birthday Honours List with the Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM) for her outstanding service to the community.

A founding member of Albury Division, Marg has dedicated more than 40 years of volunteer service to St John NSW, contributing over 13,000 recorded volunteer hours. As a First Responder, Event Health Services volunteer and Corporate Trainer, she has empowered countless people with lifesaving skills. Many of her students have credited her training as the reason they were able to confidently respond when confronted with a medical emergency, providing CPR and using an AED to help save lives.

Marg is a genuine local treasure whose commitment to serving others has had a profound impact across her community. Her many achievements have been recognised through honours including the 2009 Albury City Volunteer of the Year, the 2015 Albury City Citizen of the Year, and inclusion in the Rural Women’s Network Hidden Treasures 2025 Honour Roll.

St John NSW is incredibly proud of Marg and warmly congratulates her on this well-deserved national recognition.

Thank you for your service, Marg.

You can plan your day. You can't plan cardiac arrest.

✔️ 9am meeting
✔️ Team lunch
✔️ Safety briefing
❌ Sudden cardiac arrest

When the unplanned happens, is your workplace ready? Make sure your workplace has an AED.

National Reconciliation Week (27 May – 3 June) is a time for all Australians to learn, reflect, and take meaningful action toward a more just and equitable future for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

This year's theme, All In, is a call for all Australians to commit wholeheartedly to reconciliation, and here at at St John NSW, we recognise the importance of ensuring access to first aid education, healthcare support, and life-saving services for all communities.

As Australia’s Medical Reserve, we are committed to helping create culturally safe, inclusive, and accessible services that support better health outcomes for First Nations peoples.

Our Reconciliation Action Plan (RAP) continues to guide how we strengthen respectful relationships, support cultural learning across our organisation, and work alongside First Nations communities across NSW.

Last week, Sydney Kings fan Adam Wilson reunited with the St John Ambulance NSW volunteers who helped save his life, after suffering a cardiac arrest during the NBL Championship decider at Sydney’s Qudos Bank Arena.

In front of thousands of spectators, St John Ambulance NSW volunteers worked alongside NSW Police, venue staff and off-duty doctor to deliver lifesaving aid before Adam was stabilised and taken to hospital.

Now recovered, Adam met the team whose quick response gave him a second chance.

“I can’t properly express the gratitude I have for everyone who worked to save my life. Without the medical staff acting as quickly and calmly as they did, I wouldn’t be here today.”

This serves as a powerful reminder of why CPR training and defibrillators are so important:
❤️ Around 30,000 Australians experience sudden cardiac arrest every year
❤️ Survival chances drop by 10% for every minute defibrillation is delayed
❤️ Survival rates can reach up to 70% when a defibrillator is used before paramedics arrive

Emergencies don’t wait, and neither do volunteers like Jim.

For more than a decade, Jim has dedicated his time volunteering with St John NSW, providing first aid at community events, mentoring young cadets and responding to emergency deployments across the state.

Then in 2025, while walking through Sydney’s CBD, Jim spotted a bystander running through the crowd carrying a defibrillator. Within moments, he was helping respond to a life-threatening medical emergency.

“Because of my training, I felt confident to take control of the scene, delivering CPR and instructing those around me how to best help.”

Your Year to Volunteer ⭐🙋

This Volunteer week, we’re coming together to recognise and celebrate the countless hours donated, skills contributed, and positive impact volunteers create across our communities.

Last year, St John NSW members contributed over 290,000 volunteer hours, kept the public safe at 85 major events, and over 3,000 community events, treating almost 10,000 patients.

We hope this week offers a chance to reflect on the incredible contributions of volunteers, and inspires others to see 2026 as their year to volunteer, and experience the same sense of purpose and community.
