Tucked away in Balmain East, Waterman’s Cottage is a remarkable reminder of Sydney’s early waterfront history. Built in 1841, this charming sandstone home is associated with John Cavill, a Cornish stonemason, and a waterman known as Mackenzie or McKenzie, who was involved in the early local ferry trade. Its warm sandstone walls and distinctive balcony reflect the character of a time when life along Sydney Harbour revolved around the water. At approximately 185 years old in 2026, this historic cottage remains a precious part of Balmain’s heritage.

Sydney’s maritime heritage lives on at The Rocks ⚓

Hidden among the historic streets of The Rocks, the Sailors’ Home and the Rawson Institute for Seamen tell an important story about the people who kept Sydney connected to the sea.

The Sailors’ Home provided accommodation for visiting seamen, offering them a place to stay while they were ashore. The Rawson Institute for Seamen was established to support sailors’ welfare and provide facilities for seafarers away from home.

Together, these historic buildings reflect a time when Sydney was a busy maritime port, welcoming sailors from near and far. Today, they remain reminders of the lives, journeys and working traditions that helped shape the city’s waterfront history. ⚓🏛️

Hidden within the historic grounds of Callan Park, Bonnyview, also known as the Gardener’s Cottage, dates back to the 1870s. It is recognised as the earliest purpose-built structure associated with the Callan Park Hospital for the Insane, predating the famous Kirkbride complex. Despite its name, the cottage also accommodated patients during the hospital’s early years. Its sandstone walls, timber verandah and traditional roofline have been carefully restored, preserving a remarkable piece of Sydney’s institutional heritage.

Located on the eastern side of Sydney Harbour, Garden Island has a fascinating history dating back to the earliest days of the colony. 🇦🇺

In February 1788, just weeks after the First Fleet arrived, the island was used to grow vegetables for the crew of HMS Sirius. Over time, it became an important naval base, supporting British naval vessels before being handed over to the Royal Australian Navy in 1913.

During World War II, major construction transformed the area, and Garden Island was eventually connected to the mainland. Today, it remains a vital naval base and an important part of Sydney’s maritime heritage. ⚓

From a humble vegetable garden to a major naval stronghold, Garden Island has witnessed more than two centuries of history in Sydney Harbour.
