Congratulations to the winners of the 2026 Waverley Youth Art Prize! 🎨

Last Thursday, we celebrated the creativity and talent of young artists from across the Eastern Suburbs at the awards ceremony at Waverley Library.

Now in its 41st year, the prize attracted 261 entries from artists aged 9–18, all inspired by this year’s theme, Dreaming Future Worlds.

Congratulations to Mayor’s Prize winner Theresa Lei, all category winners, highly commended artists, and every participant who shared their work with the community. Thank you also to judges Tim Riley Walsh and Fergus Berney-Gibson, and exhibition curator Soomin Jeong.

We hope everyone is enjoying the King’s Birthday long weekend! 🌟

With an extra day to enjoy all that Waverley has to offer, why not explore our spectacular coastal walks, grab a local coffee and soak up the beauty of our beaches and parks.

Did you know Bondi Beach once welcomed a teenage Prince Charles - now King Charles III - during his 1966 visit to Australia? The future King attended a surf carnival hosted by North Bondi Surf Life Saving Club, drawing crowds to Bondi’s iconic shoreline.

Almost 60 years later, Bondi’s coastline and community spirit continue to attract visitors from around the world! 🌊

Last weekend we officially unveiled the Charing Cross Streetscape Upgrade - celebrating everything that makes this pocket of Waverley so special! ✨

The day was full of energy, with roving performers, face painting and a community raffle bringing locals together in the heart of the precinct - all under beautiful winter sunshine. ☀️

A huge thank you to the local businesses who showed their support with generous offers and discounts throughout the day, and to Final Touch Building for kindly providing their space as a green room for our performers.

Most of all, thank you to everyone who came along and helped bring the celebration to life. We love seeing our community out exploring and enjoying this incredible part of Waverley. 💙

World Environment Day is a chance to look at our coastline and the incredible life moving through it 🐋

Each year, thousands of whales pass along Waverley’s beaches during their annual migration on the “humpback highway”, a reminder of just how remarkable our ocean environment is - right here on our doorstep.

For thousands of years, whales have also held deep cultural significance for Aboriginal peoples of Coastal Sydney. The story of Buri Buri and the whale engraving at Mackenzies Point reflects this enduring connection to Sea Country and care for the environment.

Today is about more than reflection - it’s a reminder to protect what makes this place so unique: our oceans, our heritage, and the wildlife we share them with.
