It was a lucky escape early this morning for a family who woke to discover a fire burning in their garage.

Firefighters from the and FRNSW arrived quickly, with crews from Galston and Arcadia extinguishing the fire, which is believed to have been caused by an electric vehicle charger.

While there were no smoke alarms in the garage, a working smoke alarm in the hallway activated, allowing the family time to safely evacuate and giving firefighters a chance to extinguish the fire before it spread further into the home.

Remember it's important you have multiple smoke alarms installed throughout your home, particularly in areas where combustible materials may be present.

After several days of searching, a woman reported missing in the Royal National Park near Waterfall has been located alive.

Over the past few days, RFS volunteers from the Illawarra/Sutherland, Southern Highlands and Cumberland/Macarthur Districts have been working alongside the NSW State Emergency Service (SES), Volunteer Rescue Association (VRA), NSW Police Force, the NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service and NSW Ambulance in the search effort. Around 20 RFS members were deployed each day, with approximately 65 RFS personnel involved today as search operations intensified.

The woman was located around lunchtime today by RFS crews and was placed into the care of NSW Ambulance paramedics for assessment and treatment.

We thank all agencies and volunteers involved for their professionalism, dedication and teamwork throughout the operation. We are pleased to see a positive outcome for the woman, her family and everyone involved.

Yesterday, AFAC News released the Bushfire Seasonal Outlook for Winter. NSW has experienced a warmer and drier autumn than usual, with less rainfall than normal.

While parts of the state received some rainfall in mid to late May, it has not been enough to significantly improve the long-term rainfall deficits or ongoing dry conditions. As a result, many areas remain unusually dry, with some parts of northern NSW already experiencing drought conditions.

Looking ahead, forecasts suggest winter is also likely to be drier than average, particularly later in the season, with warmer daytime temperatures expected across much of the state. These conditions, especially across northern, central and eastern NSW, are increasing the risk of bushfires this winter, including fires that may be more difficult to control.

Last week, a new batch of Air Attack Supervisors learnt the ropes in Dubbo. The airspace over a fireground can be a very busy place, with waterbombing aircraft working to support ground crews and slow the spread of a bush fire. Air attack supervisors play a crucial role in coordinating those aircraft to ensure a safe and efficient operation. ✈️

Firefighters from the and Fire and Rescue NSW have worked throughout the morning to extinguish a fire burning in a General store and residential building on Station Street at Menangle (Wollondilly LGA).

It took more than 15 fire trucks to bring the fire under control. Local road closures remain in place while emergency services remain on scene.

There are no reports of injuries from the scene. The cause of the fire is not yet known with fire investigators to attend the scene throughout the day.

More than 70 firefighters from the Hornsby/Ku-ring-gai District today came together during some showery weather to undertake valuable structural firefighting training at a two-storey house prior to its demolition.

Opportunities like this are incredibly important, allowing crews to train in realistic conditions that simply can’t be replicated in the classroom. The exercise focused on structural firefighting techniques, command and control, crew coordination and working alongside neighbouring brigades to strengthen interoperability on the fireground.

A huge thank you to everyone who attended and contributed to making the day a success. Exercises like these play a vital role in ensuring our firefighters remain prepared, capable and ready to keep our community safe.

While we’ve spent the week highlighting members across the state, when it comes to emergencies we don’t always work alone. Volunteerism lies at the heart of the Australian spirit, something Christopher Hardey understands firsthand.

Since joining the Lennox Head Brigade in 2017, he’s been part of a dedicated team of 45 members responding to a wide range of incidents, including motor vehicle accidents, fires and floods. In 2025, the brigade also played a key role in supporting communities during the response to Tropical Cyclone Alfred.

Christopher has developed a passion for community engagement and is involved in both the brigade and district teams, working behind the scenes to help organise events including Get Ready Weekend, the Emergency Management Expo and Anzac Day commemorations. “My goal is to foster a closer relationship not only with our community, but also with our colleagues in other organisations, so we can work more effectively together when needed,” he said.

To further highlight the importance of strong inter-agency relationships, Christopher recently organised a photoshoot bringing together volunteers from multiple emergency services, including Marine Rescue NSW, Surf Life Saving NSW and the NSW SES.

For Christopher and many of our members, volunteering is about more than responding to emergencies, it’s about building strong connections across agencies and communities, ensuring everyone can work together when it matters most.

Have you ever wondered about the type of training brigades undertake to keep their skills sharp?

As we continue to celebrate National Volunteer Week, the Huskisson Brigade wanted to take you behind the scenes of their weekly brigade training.

Their brigade is made up of 30 dedicated members who respond to a range of incidents, including bush fires, structure fires, motor vehicle accidents, and flood and storm damage.

The weekly training plays an important role in ensuring members are prepared to respond safely and effectively when their community needs them most.

For Rhonda Porter, volunteering with the is about more than emergencies, it’s about community and connection.

Growing up in a street where family and neighbours were part of the RFS, Rhonda saw early the impact volunteers can have. In 2002 she followed in her father’s footsteps and joined Berowra Rural Fire Brigade.

What began as a way to do something different from her day job quickly became a long-term commitment.

For more than two decades, Rhonda has responded to hundreds of incidents, including the 2013 Blue Mountains fires and the 2019–20 bush fire season. She has also held key leadership roles, including Treasurer, Secretary and now Brigade President.

In 2014, she became Berowra’s first female Deputy Captain, a milestone she reflects shows the brigade’s culture acknowledging everyone has the ability to step up and lead.

Rhonda is passionate about helping communities better understand how to prepare for bush fire risk. “I’d like to turn my attention to supporting people in how they can prepare their family and property, to reduce everyone’s risk”.

It’s also a family legacy, with two of Rhonda’s children and her partner now serving alongside her. Thinking of becoming a volunteer? Check out the RFS website: www.rfs.nsw.gov.au/join
