Mounted Unit - NSW Police Force

Mounted Unit - NSW Police Force The NSW Mounted Police Unit provides high-visibility policing, crowd management, searches and community engagement.

Established in 1825, it is the world’s oldest continuously operating mounted police unit, celebrating 200 years of service in 2025. The New South Wales Mounted Police Unit is the oldest continuous operational Mounted unit in the world. It was formed by Governor Brisbane on the 7th September, 1825. In comparison the London Metropolitan Mounted Police were formed in 1828 and the Royal Canadian Mount

ed Police in 1863. By 1830 the force was commanded by Lieutenant Colonel Snodgrass. The more settled part of the colony was divided into divisions. The main detachment was stationed in Sydney; this incorporated the Governor's Guard. The city division was located at Belmore Barracks, which is the present site of Central Railway Station. There were three country divisions: they were the Western, at Bathurst; Argyle at Goulburn; and Hunter in Maitland. In the early 1900's the Mounted Police had a strength of over 800 personnel and over 900 horses. Most stations throughout the state had mounted units attached to them. It was during this time that the Mounted Police moved from Belmore Barracks to allow for the construction of Central Railway Station. Temporary accommodation was secured at Moore Park Showground, prior to occupying its present site in 1907, at the Bourke Street Police complex at Redfern.

Today marks our 201st year of providing service to the people of NSW.

It’s been around a year since we celebrated our 200th milestone with a parade through the city and a ceremony on the forecourt of the Opera House.

What a momentous occasion. One we will never forget.

From the paddock to the parade ground, Toni and Beaufort’s story has come full circle 💙

Growing up in southern NSW, Probationary Constable Toni was passionate about horses and spent years riding, training and breaking them in. One of the horses she worked with was Beaufort, who she broke in and trained before their paths went in different directions.

Beaufort ended up joining the Mounted Unit in 2023 and, now 11 years old, has spent the past three years as a police horse. Toni, meanwhile, pursued her own dream of becoming a police officer.

So when Toni attested from the NSW Police Force Academy, it was only fitting that Troop Horse Beaufort was there too. The horse she had once trained was now standing beside her in his own police role, as Toni celebrated beginning hers.

From working together in the paddock to meeting again at one of the biggest milestones in Toni’s life, it’s a reminder that you never know where hard work and passion will take you 🐴👮‍♀️
