Join us this weekend for the film screening of The Red Detachment of Women (1961), presented to you by the Communist Party of Australia!
The Red Detachment of Women (红色娘子军) is a 1961 Chinese revolutionary drama directed by Xie Jin, set in Hainan Island in the 1930s during the first phase of the Chinese Civil War between the communists and nationalists.
The story follows Wu Qionghua a young peasant woman who escapes from a brutal landlord to join the all-female unit of the Chinese Red Army, the Red Detachment of Women. Through political education, military training and personal struggle, she transforms from an abused servant into a revolutionary fighter. Along her journey, she is guided by Party commissar Hong Changqing as she grapples with questions over revenge, discipline and collective responsibility.
In spirit of International Women's Day, the City of Sydney branch of the CPA will be hosting the film at the Peter Symon House which will be open to public, so bring a friend or two, where we'll be having detailed discussions about the film and its themes.
