Yesterday marked 100 working days at REFOCUS, and what a journey it has already been.
In that time, I’ve been introduced to new ways of working, new communities, new people, and plenty of new learning. It has certainly been a steep learning curve at times, but also an incredibly rewarding one.
Across Moreton Bay, Sunshine Coast, Gympie, and Cairns, I have the privilege of working alongside people who genuinely care about our Jarjums, families and communities.
These first 100 days have reinforced something I have always known working for our people is more than a career for me; it is deeply connected to who I am and where I come from.
Growing up in the Torres Strait, family, community, and culture were simply part of who I was.
Throughout my career, there have been many achievements I am proud of, but the work that means the most has always been the work that contributes to better outcomes for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children, families, and communities.
One of the ongoing challenges in this work is knowing that meaningful change can sometimes be slow, particularly when you can clearly see what needs to change.
But that is also what keeps me motivated knowing there is always more we can do, more we can improve and more opportunities to make a difference.
These first 100 days have been about learning, adapting, building relationships, and understanding where I can make the greatest contribution.
There is still so much to learn, and plenty more I want to achieve, but after my first 100 working days, I remain grateful for the opportunity to do work that aligns so strongly with my culture, values, and purpose.
100 days down — and I’m excited about what comes next.
