Blue-tailed Monitors are one of the most elusive reptiles we search for when exploring Cape York’s rainforest. Just catching a flash of blue as it disappears into the forest is a thrill and often one of my personal highlights of a tour. The species no doubt took a tragic plunge when Cane Toads invaded their isolated habitat, but it is great to see them persisting.

A couple of our favourite elapids to see when running reptile tours up north are the Coastal Taipan and Northern Death Adder. Both infamous for the danger they pose, but incredible animals to encounter in the wild and two species that never fail to get the adrenaline going!

This November we’re heading back to Far North Queensland for 9 days of dedicated herping, from the Atherton Tablelands all the way up into the incredible rainforest of Cape York.

We’ll be targeting some of FNQ’s most iconic reptiles, including Green Pythons, Jungle Pythons, Taipans, Death Adders, Leaf-tailed Geckos and plenty more, alongside an amazing diversity of frogs, mammals and birds.

We’ve only got a couple of spots left on this small-group tour, so if you’ve ever wanted to experience FNQ’s incredible reptile diversity with a dedicated group of wildlife enthusiasts, now’s the time to jump on board.

🐍 9-DAY FAR NORTH QLD REPTILE TOUR 🦎

Join us for 9 days of dedicated herping through the Cape York rainforest and Atherton Tablelands, staying 4 nights at Turtle Creek Ecolodge before heading south for another 4 nights exploring the Tablelands region.

We’ll target some of FNQ’s most sought-after reptiles, including Green Python, Boyd’s Forest Dragon, Northern Leaf-tailed Gecko, Prickly Forest Skink, Scrub Python, Canopy Goanna and plenty more.

Designed specifically for a small group, this tour gives us more time in the field and a much better chance to focus on the species we’re there to find.

An Indian Cobra to celebrate World Snake Day🐍

Snakes play a vital role in healthy ecosystems and deserve our appreciation.

Check out this golden guy! 💛

We were stoked to come across this stunning Ridge-tailed Monitor while stopping to explore a rocky boulder outcrop in western Queensland. They’re a fairly reliable species to find in the right habitat, but this has to be one of the best-looking individuals I’ve ever seen.

While exploring a cave in outback Queensland we stumbled across this enormous Olive Python tucked away digesting a significant meal, most likely a young Wallaroo!
Although we have some amazing python diversity in Australia, finding large Olive Pythons like this is a personal favourite encounter to share with our guests.

A large Mulga Snake we witnessed weaving through the blackened desert shortly after a fire. While fire can be devastating, it also creates opportunities for predators, incapacitating some animals and forcing others out of cover. This impressive snake was likely taking full advantage of the changing landscape in search of an easy meal.

A behaviour you don’t see every day!
This Black-headed Python was found feeding on a dead bird in the middle of an outback highway. While snakes are usually thought of as active predators, this was a fascinating example of opportunistic scavenging.
