Middle Park Library is getting a glow-up! 💅

Middle Park Library will be temporarily closed from 13 April to 30 June while we begin an exciting upgrade to create a more welcoming, functional and engaging space for our community.

All other services in the building will remain open as usual.

✨ What’s being upgraded? ✨
➡️ New furniture, shelving and carpet
➡️ New self‑service kiosk and after‑hours returns bin
➡️ Fresh paint
➡️ Upgraded lighting
➡️ CCTV for improved safety
➡️ And more!

📍 During the closure, you can visit our other branches, including Albert Park Library which is located just four minutes away by car or 10 to 15 minutes by public transport.

This project is proudly co‑funded by City of Port Phillip and the State Government’s Living Libraries Infrastructure Program.

Mirka Mora mural returns to St Kilda Library with renewed protection and vibrancy 🖼️📚

A much-loved artwork has been restored and reinstalled, marking a new chapter in its lasting legacy. Mirka Mora’s Children’s Mural, created in 1980 during the St Kilda Festival in collaboration with local school children, is now back on display following extensive conservation treatment and the installation of new, custom-designed vitrines.

This important mural forms part of the City of Port Phillip Collection and has been formally recognised as integral to the library’s Heritage Victoria listing, underscoring its significance as a treasured piece of Melbourne’s cultural history.

After decades on display, the mural had developed a range of condition issues, including cracking, paint lifting, fading and accumulated surface grime. Specialist conservators from the University of Melbourne undertook detailed treatment to stabilise the panels, re-adhere fragile paint layers, and carefully clean the surface using highly sensitive techniques.

Now refreshed and rehoused, the Children’s Mural once again welcomes visitors to St Kilda Library, continuing to celebrate community creativity and artistic expression. Its return ensures that this vibrant work will be preserved and enjoyed by future generations for many years to come.

Make sure to check it out next time you’re at St Kilda Library!
