Happy Birthday Inala 🎈 Inala Nature Tours turned 32 today, and Inala’s Jurassic Garden turned 12! We toasted founder Dr Tonia Cochran OAM at Orana - our newest conservation property - while an auspicious family of Tasmanian Wedge-tailed Eagles circled overhead.

30 years ago, Inala’s first visitors to the reserve on Bruny Island were international clients interested in conservation causes. Tours were arranged by post, with letters flying back and forth across the world! We’ve come a long way since then, and while we’ve expanded, conservation remains at the heart of what we do.

Another festival highlight was the Soundscape & Dawn Chorus workshop with Ramit Singal & Erin Harris

Ramit and Erin led a group for a sound recording in the misty morning at the Inala Conservation Reserve where the guests explored the different tools scientists and sound recordists use, and learned how to use a range of sound-recording devices.

Using sounds from the field recording session, the merry gang then learned how to 'look' at audio using spectrograms, and prepare the files for uploading to public platforms and archives. What everyone learned is so valuable for supporting everything from behavioural studies and species identification tools to research on taxonomy and distribution. As well as lots of fun 😁🦉😁🦆

Today's Inala Nature Tours day tour of the island led by the fabulous Dr Cat Young. Many birds were seen, many laughed were had, new friendships forged in birding go far beyond the festival.

The Inala Foundation presents 'A Walk in Gondwana with Tim Low AM'

Join Tim Low, Australian biologist and author of Where Song Began and The New Nature on a walk through Inala’s Jurassic Garden, followed by a short presentation and book signing. Tim’s presentation will focus on plants in the Inala collection chosen for their Gondwanan connection.

Tim explores ecological issues and promotes interest in nature and conservation through his writing. His book Where Song Began was an instant best-seller, winning several prizes, including the Australian Book Industry Award for Best General Non-Fiction. Tim's book The New Nature questions the perception of nature as separate from people while critiquing the focus on wilderness as a symbol of nature. The New Nature was the inaugural winner of The Nib literary award.

All profits from this event go to the Inala Foundation, which protects wildlife and regenerates habitat on Bruny Island. In collaboration with the Inala Jurassic Garden, the Foundation also conserves endangered plant species.

BHUTAN BIRDING ADVENTURE | April 28 - May 14, 2026
Journey with Inala through the last Himalayan kingdom on this extraordinary 17-day birding expedition. We will explore pristine forests from sub-tropical lowlands to alpine heights and dazzling mountain passes, targeting 300-350 species including some of Asia's most sought-after birds. Key species include Ward's Trogon, Rufous-necked Hornbill, Beautiful Nuthatch, White-bellied Heron, Satyr Trogon, Blood Pheasant and Himalayan Monal.

We will also watch for Red Pandas, Golden Langurs and Bhutan Giant Flying Squirrels between birding sessions. Our final day in Bhutan will be spent at the spectacular Tiger's Nest Monastery, perched dramatically 600m above the Paro Valley.

The Carpentarian Grasswren captured here is, like most grasswrens, incredibly range restricted, and found in two tiny areas in the Northern Territory and Queensland. Grasswrens belong to the same family as Fairywrens, but the genus is endemic with all 14 species only found in Australia.

Welcome to all our new followers 🦜
Now seems a good time to re-introduce ourselves. Inala Nature Tours is more than a birding and wildlife tour company. Driven by a lifelong passion for Australia’s unique natural heritage, Inala founder and owner Dr Tonia Cochran OAM, a zoologist, ecotourism pioneer, and specialist wildlife guide, began Inala over 30 years ago with the purchase of extensive land on South Bruny Island, Tasmania. Tonia placed the land under a conservation covenant and in doing so, protected vital habitat for the endangered Forty-spotted Pardalote. Small tours of this property have since expanded out, encompassing small group nature tours across Australia and the world, with our conservation principles remaining the core of what we do.
