๐๐ฅ A Very Special Visit from the Sorell Fire Brigade! ๐ฅ๐
Today our Spring and Shipstern children were very excited to welcome Firefighters Aleks, Jarrod and Luke from the Sorell Fire Brigade, who kindly volunteered their time to provide our children with a fun and educational experience.
In small groups, the children had the opportunity to get up close to the fire truck, explore firefighting clothing and learn about some of the equipment firefighters use in their everyday roles. The children were able to look at, touch and learn about handheld radios, fire hydrants, hoses, nozzles, lighting and a fire extinguisher.
There was certainly lots of excitement when everyone had the opportunity to hold the fire hose! The children were also encouraged to ask questions and finished their visit with a special take-home show bag of goodies.
Firefighter Aleks asked the children, โDo you know what we do?โ
โYouโre from the fire station. I saw the fire truck when I was at my friendโs house.โ
โYou put out fires.โ
โFirefighters help us.โ
When asked what they would do if they saw smoke or fire at their house, the children shared their developing understanding of fire safety:
โTell your Mummy and Daddy and they can ring the fire truck.โ
The children were particularly fascinated to learn about fire hydrants and how firefighters can access additional water when they need more than what is available in the fire truck.
One very surprised little voice responded, โWhat! There is water in the ground?โ
Experiences like this are not only fun and educational; they also highlight the strong community connections we value here at Discovery Sorell. Connecting with local emergency services provides children with opportunities to learn about the important roles people have within our community and how firefighters help to keep us safe.
Our connection with the Sorell Fire Brigade will also continue beyond todayโs visit. The firefighters have offered to use one of their upcoming training nights to tour our service and familiarise themselves with our building, exits and fire safety equipment should we ever need their assistance in an emergency.
A huge THANK YOU to Firefighters Aleks, Jarrod and Luke and the Sorell Fire Brigade for giving their time and creating such a memorable learning experience for our children.
