This week is National Volunteer Week 2026 🔥🚒

The Snug Fire Brigade was officially formed in 1968 by local residents Ray Taylor and Thomas "Bill" Holmes in the aftermath of the devastating 1967 Black Tuesday bushfires.
The brigade started as a small volunteer group with only four members and a water pump towed on the back of a trailer.

Today our assets look very different!
We recognise and thank our members for their contribution in keeping our community safe and attending incidents in their busy lives.

We train every week on Wednesday night at 7.00pm at the station located in Wellbour Ave.
Come along and meet the members and find out how you can volunteer with Tasmania Fire Service or visit fire.tas.gov.au

🔥 Reminder: Always supervise your burn-offs 🔥

Conditions across Tasmania remain dry, so it’s important to take extra care with any outdoor burning.

While Fire Permits are not currently required, people are encouraged to register burns in advance with Tasmania Fire Service by calling 1800 000 699.

Registering a burn will ensure your local brigade are aware of your plans should they need to respond, and you will prevent having a brigade turn up unnecessarily.

If you’re planning to burn:
• Always have an adult in attendance until the fire is completely extinguished
• Be prepared to manage the fire and monitor changing weather conditions
• Have suitable, working firefighting equipment on hand
• Never light fires in peat, humus or marram grass
• Let your neighbours know—smoke can impact health and farming operations (especially vineyards)

Before you leave any fire:
👉 Soak it.
👉 Stir it.
👉 Soak it again.

Also think carefully when lighting campfires or using machinery, and double check that recent fires (including fire pits) are fully out.

⚠️ Remember: Landowners are responsible for any damage caused by fires that escape their property.
📞 If you see signs of a fire re-igniting (smoke or flames), call Triple Zero (000) immediately.

May 4 is both International Firefighters Day and Saint Florian’s Day, the patron Saint of Firefighters. The day recognises the bravery, sacrifice, and dedication of firefighters across the globe who risk their lives to protect communities, property and the environment from fires, disasters and emergencies.

International Firefighters Day is traced to the bushfires in Linton, Victoria, on 2 December 1998 when five volunteer firefighters lost their lives battling flames under dangerous and unpredictable conditions.

Saint Florian was a Roman military officer in charge of firefighting brigades. He became a symbol of courage and selfless public service.

A service in Hobart will pay tribute to Neil Brooksbank who died last October. He began his firefighting journey in 1995 as a volunteer with the Huonville Fire Brigade, becoming a career firefighter four years later.

He rose through the ranks to Assistant Director and represented Tasmania on international deployments, including the Christchurch earthquake in 2011 and the British Columbia wildfires in 2017.

His legacy includes strengthening remote area firefighting capability by helping to establish the TFS Aviation Wing, and advocating to increase the number of cancers recognised for workers compensation without having to prove its cause.

Timely reminder to check your alarms ‼️

Daylight savings is ending tonight, so take some time to do some life-saving home maintenance.

While you're turning back your clocks, it's the perfect time to ensure your smoke alarms are in top condition. Take a few minutes to:

✅ Test your smoke alarms
🧹 Clean them of dust and debris.
🔋 Replace batteries or install a new smoke alarm if requried.
✅ Check you have them in all the important places: every bedroom or sleeping area, hallway, living area, above stairways, and garage.
