🖤💛❤️ CULTURE, COMEDY AND COMMUNITY: SINGLETON CELEBRATES 50 YEARS OF NAIDOC WEEK 🖤💛❤️

Singleton will celebrate a major milestone this July, marking 50 years of NAIDOC Week with a vibrant program of events that invites the community to connect, learn and celebrate Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture.

Alongside the much-loved Singleton NAIDOC Community Day at Singleton Showground, this year’s program features comedy, storytelling, film screenings and hands-on cultural activities throughout the school holidays.

While the centrepiece of the celebrations, the Singleton NAIDOC Community Day, will return on Wednesday 8 July from 10am - 2pm, offering a free day of entertainment, cultural experiences and family-friendly activities for people of all ages, it will all kick off on Sunday 5 July with acclaimed comedian Andy Saunders bringing his unique blend of humour, storytelling and cultural insight to Singleton Public Library from 2-3pm.

The Library will also welcome children’s author and illustrator Melissa-Jane Fogarty for a special Storytime on Saturday 11 July at 10am, and there’ll also be a range of NAIDOC-themed activities such as painting, weaving and feather jewellery-making workshops as part of its school holiday program.

Singleton Arts and Cultural Centre will also get involved by showing a series of special film screenings in the gallery from Tuesday 7 July to Sunday 12 July.

Chairperson of the Singleton NAIDOC Committee Jade Perry said NAIDOC Week was about showcasing culture, community and connection.

“The NAIDOC Community Day will have a Welcome to Country and Smoking Ceremony, cultural performances, workshops and free activities for all ages, including a jumping castle, teacups, reptiles, petting zoo and much more,” she said.

“Our community day brings people together through culture, entertainment and shared experiences, creating a welcoming space for people of all ages and backgrounds to celebrate alongside one another.

“It's always inspiring to see the support this event receives from local organisations, services and community members. We are incredibly grateful to our sponsors – Mach Energy, AGL, BHP, Glencore and Singleton Council – whose ongoing support helps make this celebration possible and ensures the community can enjoy it free of charge.”

The community day will also feature a touch football gala showcasing local Indigenous talent, with Wonnarua Wiyala taking on the All Stars mixed team.

Mayor of Singleton, Cr Sue Moore said NAIDOC Week was an important opportunity for the community to come together in recognition of the world's oldest continuing culture.

“NAIDOC Week is a time to celebrate the strength, resilience and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples while creating opportunities to learn, reflect and connect,” she said.

“Whether you're attending the community day, enjoying a performance, participating in a workshop or simply spending time with family and friends, there are many ways to be part of this important celebration.

“With a range of free activities available throughout the school holidays, I encourage everyone to get involved and experience all that this year's program has to offer.”

FOUND 🐾

This dog was found in Lachlan Avenue, Singleton Heights and is now in the care of our Animal Management Facility.

Unfortunately, the dog's microchip is not up to date, so our Rangers are unable to contact the owner.

If you are the owner, please call Council on T 02 6578 7290 during usual business hours to arrange collection.

🐱 FREE CAT DESEXING AVAILABLE 🐱

Hunter Valley Cat Haven is offering free desexing, microchipping and vaccinations for female cats in the Singleton LGA.

As an approved rescue organisation that works with Singleton Council, Hunter Valley Cat Haven has helped rehome many cats and kittens from our Animal Management Facility over the years, giving them a second chance at finding a loving home.

With a large undesexed cat population across Singleton and the rising cost of living making veterinary care harder for some households to afford, this program can make a real difference for both pet owners and the wider community.

By desexing your cat, you're helping to reduce unwanted litters, improve animal welfare and support efforts to manage the local cat population.

Free Desexing Program Now Open

We are pleased to announce that our Desexing Program is now running again, with a limited number of places available for female cats only.

This program has been made possible through funding received from a grant provided by the Office of Local Government. We are grateful for this support, which enables us to assist local cat owners in desexing their cats and helps reduce unwanted litters, prevent ongoing breeding, and ease the burden on rescue groups, pounds, and the wider community.

To apply, please follow these simple steps:

✅ Send a private message to this page requesting a Desexing Program application.
✅ Carefully read the Terms and Conditions.
✅ If you meet the eligibility requirements, complete and submit the application form. We will contact you directly.

Eligibility Requirements:
• You must reside within the Singleton LGA.
• The cat must be owned by you.
• Limit of one cat per household.
• Cats must be aged 5 months or older.
• Free microchipping and vaccination is included as part of the program.

🐾This program is intended to assist people who are genuinely struggling with the cost of desexing, microchipping, and vaccinating their cat. We kindly ask that applications only be submitted by those who require financial assistance.
If you require assistance with flea worm treatments and food please let us know.

Unfortunately, we are unable to offer this program outside the Singleton LGA at this time. However, with July being National Desexing Month, there may be other discounted desexing programs available in neighbouring areas.
