Fires in the kitchen are the leading cause of house fires in NSW. The cause is almost always the same - unattended cooking.

If you have to leave the kitchen, turn the stove off. A hot pan only needs a minute.

Cold dinner beats a house fire.

You won't have time to think it through when smoke is filling the hallway.

Walk through your home and find two ways out of every room.

Pick a safe meeting place outside. Practise it with everyone you live with, kids included.

Plan it now, while it's still just a plan.

This week the brigade held its 2026 Annual General Meeting where we reflected on an important milestone for our brigade, while also recognising the service and dedication of a number of our members.

After 15 years as Captain of Silverdale Rural Fire Brigade, Barbara Jolley has chosen to step down as Brigade Captain, marking the end of an extraordinary chapter for our brigade and community.

Over the past decade and a half, Barbara has led Silverdale through some of the most challenging periods in our history, including the devastating 2019/2020 bushfires, major flood events, and hundreds of calls in between. Her leadership, dedication and commitment to both the brigade and the community have left a lasting impact.

Under Barbara’s leadership, the brigade has grown significantly, strengthened its capabilities, and evolved into the brigade it is today. Her service to our community has also been recognised more broadly through her being named Wollondilly Citizen of the Year in 2020, a reflection of the enormous contribution she has made over many years.

We are also very pleased that she will continue to serve the brigade as Senior Deputy Captain, with her experience and leadership continuing to be an invaluable part of the brigade.

At the same time, we congratulate Jarrod Gould on stepping up into the role of Captain. Jarrod has been a dedicated member of the brigade for over 20 years, has served as Senior Deputy Captain since 2021 and has consistently contributed through his leadership, commitment and service to both the brigade and our wider community. We know he will bring great passion and dedication to the role, and we look forward to supporting him as he leads the brigade into its next chapter.

A number of members were also recognised with citations and awards at this year’s AGM. In recognition of his longstanding contribution to the brigade, Jarrod was also awarded Life Membership of the brigade and 19 members of the brigade were awarded Premier’s Flood Emergency Citations in recognition of their efforts and service during the 2022/2023 flood events.

Please join us in thanking Barbara for her remarkable 15 years as Captain, congratulating Jarrod on his election as Captain and recognising all members acknowledged at this year’s AGM for their service to our community.

The Official Bush Fire Danger Period will conclude at midnight tomorrow (31 March 2026) for the Wingecarribee Shire Council and Wollondilly Shire Council LGA's.

From Wednesday 1 April, fire permits will no longer be required for residents, except those properties within the town limits of Warragamba, Picton, Mittagong, Moss Vale, Bowral and Bundanoon, who are required to obtain a fire permit from Fire & Rescue NSW all year round.

Even though a fire permit is no longer required, you must still notify your neighbours and the local fire authority 24 hours before burning as well as comply with any Council Backyard Burning Policies.

Before lighting up, you should also check the forecast weather conditions and have sufficient equipment on hand to control and contain the fire to your own property. Failure to notify neighbours or the RFS, or allowing a fire to escape can result in significant fines.

To notify of your intent to burn, use the online burn notification tool at www.rfs.nsw.gov.au/notify or call your local Fire Control Centre during business hours.
