WorkSafe Victoria can we please organise an urgent review of your decision to impose new restrictions at the resource recovery centre.

This was built relatively recently as an industry leading, purpose built facility for the safe and efficient handling of waste.

Your changes have made the site more dangerous. With multiple accidents and near misses already reported since the changes.

Not to mention, the disincentive for people to actually take their waste there- rather than illegally dump it in our environment.

1. Why would tipping not be allowed? On a flat concrete surface?
2. Why would people not be allowed in their Ute or trailer, especially given the new barriers- sideways lifting are the most likely movement leading to back injuries
3. Why would these barriers be installed, forcing people to lift larger objects over 2m high- above their heads?

Does anyone have a higher up contact at work safe Victoria?

Traffic engineering Part 4

The reduction in speed limits on rural roads across the north ward has frustrated so many residents.

Dropping the speed limit from 100 to 80 is a 20% reduction in productivity. And is costing busy families extra hours, fuel and wear & tear.

And the speed enforcement cameras which are now continually operating on these roads is just revenue raising.

Governments at all levels need to remember that speed limits are not target speeds… that are maximum speeds, when the conditions are right.

And don’t think you’re safe in the south, you’re next!

The four bin system…

At a recent council meeting I put forward the case that councillors had a responsibility to the public to fight for better rubbish collection.

If a council can’t get “rates, rubbish and local responsibilities” right, then there’s a serious problem.

We might be diverting some green waste from landfill, but I would describe that as a long way from “success”.

At last nights council meeting I fought hard against ongoing speed limit reductions across our shire.

Here’s a short clip which gives a pretty accurate summary.

Unfortunately, not all councillors agreed and the speed reduction target was passed 5 to 4.

Today I attended a listening post in Ruffy for the Victorian parliamentary bushfire inquiry.

And although it’s early days, I’m pretty confident this inquiry is going to amount to nothing.

The level of disinterest, particularly for any criticism of the CFA, was obvious.

It’s going to take some real focus from all political players to ensure this inquiry isn’t a massive waste of time for those who are trying to rebuild their lives.

The most important thing current councillors are trying to bring to Mitchell Shire is private investment. The state and federal governments are not providing the funds they once were.

Investment, jobs, prosperity leads to pride in our townships, lower crime and less social issues. It’s a proven formula.

It’s taken longer than I’d hoped, but MS now have an economic development department and the beginnings of a plan.
