Think Before You Bait

Rodent poisons don’t just kill rats and mice — they can harm the predators that keep nature in balance. 💔
When a mouse or rat eats bait, the poison stays in its body. Raptors like Barn Owls, Falcons, Hawks and even powerful Eagles can then be poisoned too when they eat that same prey. It’s a heartbreaking and preventable problem that affects wildlife all over Australia.

There are safer ways to manage rodents — use wildlife-safe traps, block entry points, and keep food stored securely. Every small choice helps protect our natural pest controllers. By saying no to poisons, you’re helping keep our skies filled with healthy, thriving raptors!

Not every day you get to hold one of Australia’s most unique raptors!

The Pacific Baza — also known as the Crested Hawk — is a striking bird with bold banding, bright yellow eyes, and that unmistakable crest. Unlike many other raptors, Bazas are rainforest hunters, gliding gracefully through the canopy in search of stick insects, frogs, and small reptiles. Their gentle nature and curious personality make every encounter with them unforgettable.

Muriel our Pacific Baza is one of our sweetest birds and loves to fly glove to glove making everyone she meets full in love!

🪶 The Nankeen Kestrel – Australia’s Little Hovering Hunter 🪶
These beautiful little falcons do an incredible job keeping our ecosystems balanced — feeding on insects, mice and small reptiles — but they still face challenges from habitat loss, pesticides, and traffic hazards.

Here are a few simple ways you can help Nankeen Kestrels (and other birds of prey):

🌾 Protect open spaces – Kestrels rely on open grasslands and paddocks to hunt. Supporting conservation of natural and farmland habitats makes a real difference.

🐭 Avoid using poisons – Rodent baits and insecticides can harm kestrels when they eat affected prey. Choose wildlife-safe pest control options instead.

🏡 Add nesting opportunities – Installing nest boxes in open areas can provide safe breeding spots where natural hollows are scarce.

💬 Share the message – Teaching others about these small but mighty raptors helps build awareness and appreciation for their role in nature.

Every small action helps keep these incredible hunters soaring over Australia’s skies. 💛

🦉🐍 Things are getting a little hiss-terical this Halloween at Raptor Domain! 🎃

Our Boobook owl Boo has his spooky stare perfected, and the python is slinking through the shadows looking for a little Halloween mischief. Together, they make the perfect creepy-crawly (and feathery!) duo. 👀💀

Keep your eyes open… and your lights on — it’s a wild night out there! 👻

The Tawny Frogmouth Takes the Crown!
After years as runner-up, Australia’s most chill, tree-branch-disguised bird has finally done it — the Tawny Frogmouth is officially 2025 Bird of the Year! 🥇🐦

These masters of camouflage aren’t owls (surprise!) but night birds with huge personalities and even bigger eyes. 💛

Let’s celebrate our new feathery icon — and keep protecting the trees and habitats that let them thrive.

✨ Nature’s waterproof design ✨

This close-up shows just how incredible bird feathers really are! 🪶💧
The tiny water droplets sitting perfectly on the surface show the natural water resistance of feathers. Birds have a special oil gland near the base of their tail (called the uropygial gland), which they use to preen and coat their feathers — keeping them clean, flexible, and waterproof.

This clever adaptation helps birds stay dry and warm, even in heavy rain or while swimming! 🌧️🦜

Egg-citing but not quite hatching! 🥚

Some of our resident birds — including our Kookaburra Banjo, Bush Stone-curlew Donald, Tawny Frogmouth Muppet, and Black Kite Ned — have been laying eggs lately! Can you guess whose is whose?

While these eggs are infertile (meaning they won’t hatch), it’s still a completely natural and healthy behaviour. During breeding season, hormones and instincts kick in, encouraging our birds to nest and lay even without a mate.

We always monitor our birds closely during this time to make sure they stay happy and comfortable — and to give them the space they need to show off their nesting skills. 💛
