A special morning at The Seaham Knitting Circle to remember those who served so bravely. Lest we forget. Also great to see the dedication of the new flagpole installed by Port Stephens Council.

I’m heartbroken tonight to see my beautiful sign at the Seaham Bird Watching Hut has been vandalised. I dedicated months of hard work and love to this project, all on a voluntary basis, hoping it would bring joy to the local community. Port Stephens Council kindly funded the printing and installation through the Vibrant Spaces Grant program. To see this disrespectful and destructive vandalism makes me feel so sad and disappointed. Please report any information you might have to Port Stephens Council.

On today in Stroud. Just a short drive from Seaham for an entertaining afternoon. The most talented, Anne Frost OAM, has written a beautiful new radio play ‘Amongst Cedars’. Inspired by Under Milkwood. Set in Blimeyvillle (Stroud) in 1930’s, it observes a day in the life of some of the residents. If you’re around Stroud today, I highly recommend you go and watch. It’s absolutely charming and witty and a credit to Anne.

Seaham Knitting Circle Memorial
In October 1914, the Seaham branch of the Australian Red Cross was established. From the beginning, the group was known as the Knitting Circle as the members were prolific knitters and sent many articles to Australian troops on the Western Front.
At the conclusion of World War I, the people of Seaham welcomed back their sons and mourned those lost. In 1921, the Knitting Circle members erected a memorial flag pole to honour those they had lost.
Later in December 1921, the Seaham Knitting Circle was disbanded.
The memorial is the local site for Anzac Day commemorations.

Brandon House, Seaham
(Private Property No Public Access)
Alexander Warren arrived in NSW in 1824 and soon afterwards was awarded a land grant of 2000 acres at Seaham. He extended this holding with further grants and purchases. Warren was a successful farmer and pastoralist and grew a small number of Burgundy grape vines which were harvested to make his ‘Warren’s Wines’ for consumption within his household. He encouraged others to plant more vines. Warren was a magistrate for the Paterson district and was later appointed to the NSW Legislative Council before retiring to Brandon where he died in 1876, aged 81. Warren never married and his Brandon estate was left to his grand nephew William Fisher Jnr. William Fisher built Brandon House in 1883, after his marriage to Dorothea Mosman of ‘Burrowell’ East Seaham. It has remained the home of the Fisher family since.

The Edgeworth David Quarry located In Seaham.
The site was dedicated as a Reserve for Scientific Purposes in 1925 and named after Professor T. W. Edgeworth David (University of Sydney) who earlier discovered and documented the site. Professor David had been surveying the Hunter region coal measures and this was an incidental discovery. The Seaham Glacial Beds, some 300 million years old, are a record of the deposition of sediment in a glacial lake. They are a tangible link to similar deposits of the same age in Southern Africa and South America, all part of the Gondwana supercontinent which was geographically much further south than today, before its progressive northward drift and breakup.

Seaham School of Arts
Built in 1902, the hall was later extended and a supper room added. The building is a good example of a Federation period rural hall and is the only remaining relic of what was the town centre, with the Post Office previously immediately opposite on Warren Street. The original substantial Public School buildings were destroyed in the 1939 bushfires.
Dr Henry Carmichael, an early Seaham pioneer and educator, is credited with leading the establishment of the School of Arts and Mechanics Institute movement in Sydney and throughout NSW. The memorial gate posts and internal walls, which are lined with photographs of local boys who served in World War I, some of whom never returned, remain as a small window into the past.
