๐Ÿ’ช๐Ÿฝ NYFL is proud to share that the Board and current CEO Sean-Paul Stephens are working together on the next stage of NYFLโ€™s self-determination journey: a planned transition toward Ngarluma and/or Yindjibarndi leadership!

Sean-Paul and the board believe the time is right for a Ngarluma/Yindjibarndi person to take the reins
๐Ÿ‘ฉ๐Ÿฝโ€๐Ÿ’ผ๐Ÿ‘จ๐Ÿพโ€๐Ÿ’ผ

NYFL is the strongest it has ever been ๐Ÿ’ช๐Ÿฝ

๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿพ Over recent years, NYFL has strengthened its governance, grown its community programs, advanced the modernisation of the 1998 Agreement with Woodside/North West Shelf. NYFL has built new partnerships, strengthened its advocacy for Ieramugadu, and continued to support members and the broader Ngarda-ngarli community through practical, community-focused work.

NYFL has been recognised on the global stage
๐ŸŒ

So the next step is to identify the right Ngurrara leader for NYFLโ€™s future ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿพ

NYFL will soon release an Expression of Interest for Ngarluma and Yindjibarndi leaders who may wish to consider the CEO role of NYFL ๐Ÿ’š

This process will be about finding, supporting and setting up the next CEO for success.

NYFL Chair Michael Woodley said:

โ€œThis is a positive and important step for NYFL. Our goal has always been strong Ngurrara-ngarli leadership, and we want to make sure the next CEO is supported properly and given every opportunity to succeed. Sean-Paul has worked with the board to rebuild NYFL. We are proud of his work. He has always worked with us to bring in the next Ngarluma and Yindjibarndi leaders.โ€

Sean-Paul, now in his fifth year at the helm of NYFL, has advocated for Ngurrara-ngarli (Traditional Owners), and ensured NYFL has strong finances and governance. Since starting as CEO he his family has grown, and he now has three children under 4 years old.

Sean-Paul Stephens said he is excited for the next leader to come in and take the reins!

โ€œFrom the beginning, the Board and I have said we want to transition to Ngurrara leadership. I am so proud to be part of that journey. Once weโ€™ve got the right Ngurrara leader, I wonโ€™t be the CEO, but I will always be there to support community, Ngaarda-ngarli, and Ieramugadu. My heart is here.โ€

This is a joyful and important moment for NYFL โ€” honouring the work already done, while taking the next step toward a strong, healthy and prosperous Ngarda-ngarli future ๐Ÿ’ช๐Ÿฝ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿพ๐Ÿ‘ฉ๐Ÿฝโ€๐Ÿ’ผ๐Ÿ‘จ๐Ÿพโ€๐Ÿ’ผ๐Ÿง‘๐Ÿฝโ€๐Ÿ’ผ

If you are a Ngarluma/Yindjibarndi person who wants to have a chat, some along to the community meeting this Tuesday at the Ngurin Centre for a yarn with Sean-Paul and the Board!

๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿพ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿพ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿพ Congratulations to the Ngaarda-ngarli artists recognised at this yearโ€™s Cossack Art Awards ๐Ÿ‘ฉ๐Ÿพโ€๐ŸŽจ ๐Ÿ–ผ๏ธ๐Ÿ†

๐ŸŒŠ It is fitting that these works are celebrated in Bajinhurrba (Cossack), a place of profound cultural significance on Ngarluma Ngurra ๐ŸŒŠ

Long before it became a colonial port, Bajinhurrba was, and remains, an important cultural landscape where stories, trade, ceremony and connection to Country continue across generations ๐Ÿ–ค

Today, the Cossack Art Awards provide an opportunity for artists to share stories, perspectives and connections through extraordinary works of art.

A special congratulations to the First Nations artists recognised by the judges:

๐Ÿ† Jenny Butt โ€“ Nyurnma (Burnt Country)
Best Overall Artwork
A striking and richly layered work that captures the power and complexity of Country after fire. The judges described it as a work that continues to reveal itself over time, inviting viewers to slow down, listen and reflect.

๐Ÿ† Rodney Adams โ€“ Roebourne Town mid-80s
Best Artwork by Pilbara Artist
A powerful map-like depiction of Roebourne centred on the Harding River, celebrating a period in the townโ€™s history and reminding us of the riverโ€™s enduring importance before it was dammed.

๐Ÿ† Tessa Birch โ€“ 6AM Low Tide
Painting by Pilbara Indigenous Artist
A beautifully observed portrayal of the meeting of land and sea at low tide, revealing the intricate colours, textures and rhythms of the coastal environment.

๐Ÿ† Allery Sandy โ€“ After the Cyclone
Pilbara Landscape Award
An aerial perspective of the Pilbara transformed by cyclonic rain, capturing the movement of water across Country and the life it brings to the landscape.

๐Ÿ‘ Tenellia Mokotupu โ€“ Bitharndi โ€“ The Pink & Grey Galah
Highly Commended โ€“ Painting by Pilbara Indigenous Artist
A tender work depicting three galahs nestled together within the protective hollow of an old river gum, celebrating kinship, shelter and the natural world.

๐Ÿ‘ Marlene Harold โ€“ Early Morning Mist
Highly Commended โ€“ North West Flora and Fauna
A subtle and atmospheric painting that captures the layered colours and shifting light of an early Pilbara morning.

โค๏ธ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿพ Congratulations to each of these artists, and to all First Nations artists who exhibited this year. Your work enriches our region, strengthens culture, and reminds us that the Pilbara is not only a place of immense natural beauty, but one of enduring stories, knowledge and creativity.

It is with heavy hearts that we acknowledge the passing of Senior Ngarluma Elder, Mr C. Churnside.

Juju was a Ngarluma language expert who shared his language and culture with the next generations and the world.

Along with his peers, he was key in recording and preserving Ngarluma language.

We extend our deepest condolences to all Ngurrara-ngarli (Traditional Owners) of this Ngarluma Ngurra (Country) who are mourning Juju, and to all Ngaarda-ngarli (Aboriginal people) across the region and across the nation.

Juju brought light to many lives, through his laughter and good nature. He often made his family and friends laugh.

Jujuโ€™s flame of joy, laughter and cultural knowledge will continue to live on through the many people whose lives he touched and inspired.

๐Ÿ“ธ Ieramugadu (Roebourne), Ngarluma Ngurra and the place Juju called home

โ€”-

Please note there have been a tragic number of losses in the community. Juju passed on a weekend where there were already two funerals. The shadow the recent loss of fellow senior Elder also remains. We ask all stakeholders and visitors to be patient and understanding during this immense period of Sorry Business

It is with heavy hearts we acknowledge the passing of Mr. D. Walker. Juju (Old Fella) was a Senior Ngarluma Elder, and longtime pillar of the Ieramugadu (Roebourne) community.

Juju was a kind and generous leader.

He lived for his community, his people, and all First Nations people.

We extend our condolences to all Ngurrara-ngarli (Traditional Owners) of this Ngarluma Ngurra (Country) who are mourning juju. And all Ngaarda-ngarli (Aboriginal people) across the region, and the nation.

We have lost a great man. A leader. And a kind heart.

Jujuโ€™s passion and leadership lives on in all those who were fortunate to have been part of his journey.
