Message from the Chief Officer
Ben Millington
Dear colleagues,
While this email is being sent to everyone, I ask that you repost this on your shared Facebook groups to ensure everyone who is a Rural Fire Service Queensland member can obtain the facts.
In recent days, you may have seen or heard media reports relating to our RFSQ fleet, which are mainly focused on the ongoing roll-out of appliances and safety concerns.
Your safety is my absolute priority.
I must clarify the facts here and assure you of the importance we place on ensuring you have the right equipment to protect your communities. This is why the RFSQ funded and built the Bushfire Heavy Attack prototype in partnership with RFBAQ to ensure brigades can interact and comment on the appliance designs. Significant investment has been made in modernising the fleet, and contrary to the claims of those quoted in media reports, all new and replacement appliances meet the necessary standards for operational response.
Updated 2024 vehicle manufacturer user manuals are being provided to brigades, ensuring volunteer members have the necessary information to operate appliances safely and effectively.
As I have previously discussed with you, a comprehensive fleet review has commenced to ensure all RFSQ firefighting appliances are fit for purpose and are built and delivered to brigades as quickly as possible.
This review will result in the first-ever detailed RFSQ Fleet Strategy which will outline a pathway to audit the existing RFSQ fleet, develop a framework for standard fleet designs and provide guidance on a detailed procurement program. This is a document that has never existed prior to this point. As this work progresses, the review team will continue to engage with key stakeholders, including RFSQ volunteer members.
The frontline fleet is a crucial priority of the newly established Rural Fire Service Advisory Committee (RFSAC). I encourage all volunteer members to continue providing feedback and raise any concerns through their RFSAC representative or local Area Office. This group was appointed through an open process to ensure that frontline volunteer issues are presented directly to me from this peak consultative committee.
Many of you have already provided countless hours on the fireground, I want to thank you for your hard work and dedication.
In the background, the wider RFSQ team and me are 100% focused on delivering for you on the front line. We have made significant progress together, but more work is needed, and we will leave no stone unturned.
Let’s continue to work together as we face the season's challenges and remain focused on community safety.
Sincerely,
Ben Millington
