Brigade Update: Water Tanks

You may or may not be aware that the brigade has four water tanks across our brigade area. These tanks are vital to protect our community. We recently replaced 3 concrete tanks due to them being vandalised and leaking. Mt Cambell belongs to the Lockyer and Somerset group, and with the help of Wayne Scholl, our Lockyer Group Officer, we secured funding and replaced the damaged tanks. You may notice the new tanks in the following locations. We also have one tank on Kennedy’s Road that did not need replacement.

1. Cnr Stockyard Flagstone Creek Rd
2. Cnr Rockmount and Preston Rd
3. Cnr Hell Hole and Preston Boundary Rd
4. Kennedy’s Rd (not replaced)

The Lockyer Somerset group offered us the use of their tanker to fill the new tanks, which provided a great training exercise opportunity. We were able to practice taking water from a privately owned tank (thank you to Craig Smith for the donation of water) to the tanker and using a fire hydrant up at Top Camp to fill the tanks. Thank you to everyone who helped install the tanks and those who assisted with filling them.

It is helpful for all brigade members to be aware of the tanks' location. The tanks will only be accessed by brigade members for firefighting purposes. The water is not potable and likely contains traces of fire-retardant foam. It is in everybody’s best interest that the tanks are available for emergency use when necessary. We would appreciate it if the community were alert to inappropriate activity. Thanks to this recent upgrade, we are in a much better position to support the community in the event of fires.

Thank you to everyone who attended the Fire Brigade training last Saturday, February 1st. There was a great turnout of new and existing members. We also held our first general meeting for the New Year. This was followed by a sausage sizzle, refreshments, and, of course, Joan Walker’s famous cream puffs.

From now on, keep in mind training is always held on the 1st of each month.

Another great night at the Stockyard twilight markets. Many thanks to the Hall Committee Stockyard Creek Community Hall for allowing us to promote our brigade and services. A special thanks to our brigade members Mo, James and Clara for attending on our behalf. The display looked awesome.

Message from the Chief Officer
Ben Millington

Dear colleagues,

While this email is being sent to everyone, I ask that you repost this on your shared Facebook groups to ensure everyone who is a Rural Fire Service Queensland member can obtain the facts.

In recent days, you may have seen or heard media reports relating to our RFSQ fleet, which are mainly focused on the ongoing roll-out of appliances and safety concerns.

Your safety is my absolute priority.

I must clarify the facts here and assure you of the importance we place on ensuring you have the right equipment to protect your communities. This is why the RFSQ funded and built the Bushfire Heavy Attack prototype in partnership with RFBAQ to ensure brigades can interact and comment on the appliance designs. Significant investment has been made in modernising the fleet, and contrary to the claims of those quoted in media reports, all new and replacement appliances meet the necessary standards for operational response.

Updated 2024 vehicle manufacturer user manuals are being provided to brigades, ensuring volunteer members have the necessary information to operate appliances safely and effectively.
As I have previously discussed with you, a comprehensive fleet review has commenced to ensure all RFSQ firefighting appliances are fit for purpose and are built and delivered to brigades as quickly as possible.

This review will result in the first-ever detailed RFSQ Fleet Strategy which will outline a pathway to audit the existing RFSQ fleet, develop a framework for standard fleet designs and provide guidance on a detailed procurement program. This is a document that has never existed prior to this point. As this work progresses, the review team will continue to engage with key stakeholders, including RFSQ volunteer members.

The frontline fleet is a crucial priority of the newly established Rural Fire Service Advisory Committee (RFSAC). I encourage all volunteer members to continue providing feedback and raise any concerns through their RFSAC representative or local Area Office. This group was appointed through an open process to ensure that frontline volunteer issues are presented directly to me from this peak consultative committee.

Many of you have already provided countless hours on the fireground, I want to thank you for your hard work and dedication.

In the background, the wider RFSQ team and me are 100% focused on delivering for you on the front line. We have made significant progress together, but more work is needed, and we will leave no stone unturned.

Let’s continue to work together as we face the season's challenges and remain focused on community safety.

Sincerely,

Ben Millington

Vale Ken Kennedy - Mt Campbell Rural Fire Fighter and Fire Warden

You may be aware that the Mt Campbell Rural Fire Brigade and our community recently lost one of our most experienced and valued brigade members, Fire Warden Ken Kennedy. Ken was a highly respected firefighter and warden for our brigade.

The Mt Campbell Rural Fire Brigade would like to pay our respects to Ken, who was actively involved with the brigade for over four decades and whose knowledge and expertise in firefighting were relied upon heavily by all who fought fires alongside him. His thoroughness and careful actions made him someone you always hoped would be able to attend an incident, and he will be sadly missed. Our condolences go to Ken's Family and friends at this time.

His Funeral will be held at Burstows at 9:30am tomorrow,
Friday 20th September.

For those who require a fire permit within the region Ken had previously been responsible for (Priors Road Rockmount to Stockyard Ck), Inspector, Area Manager, and Chief Fire Warden for RFSQ Somerset Lockyer Paul Storrs will act as fire warden for this area until further notice. For anyone wishing to apply for a permit to light a fire, please contact Paul on 0754682405 or Mobile: 0447754030.
